San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) seeks a Board eligible or Board-certified full-time Supervising Child Psychiatrist. Under the general direction of the Medical Director, the Supervising Child Psychiatrist will provide clinical direction for psychiatric clinical programs, participate in the overall management of division and inter-division issues, and supervise a talented, dedicated cadre of collaborative and experienced medical, nursing, professional and experienced child psychiatric professionals, currently including a team of 8 Child Psychiatrists. The Supervising Child Psychiatrist will also provide direct psychiatric care services for youth and families in County Clinics and programs.

Primarily centered in San Mateo, the Supervising Child Psychiatrist will travel throughout the County to serve as part of clinical teams.

The position offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package which includes County funded malpractice insurance, retirement plans and health benefits for retirees, reimbursement of professional dues and expenses (up to $3,000/year), an additional 5% increase in salary for each qualifying Board certification up to two (2) Boards, administrative leave time at 5 hours per pay period up to 260 hours (this is prorated for part time employees) that can be cashed out up to 50%, and a wellness program.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Direct and administer a child psychiatric program.

• Provide clinical supervision and direction to all levels of medical/professional staff including assigning, directing, and monitoring work.

• Develop and monitor adherence to medical policies, procedures and protocols.

• Provide training and supervision to psychiatric residents and also to other interns and students when appropriate.

• Supervise medical, professional, and technical and support staff; full supervision includes responsibility for selection, performance evaluation, and corrective action.

• Evaluate and treat children and adolescents in clinic, day treatment, day school, residential, juvenile justice and other settings.

• Recommend, prescribe and provide psychiatric management including psychotherapy and psychosocial treatment, family therapy, group therapy, and psychopharmacological and biological assessment and treatment.

• Provide consultation, review, and guidance to other physicians in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents.

• Participate in quality improvement programs.

• Provide consultation and training services to non-physicians about child and adolescent cases and issues.

• Provide consultation to agencies engaged in collaborative services to treated children and adolescents.

• Consult with other medical and mental health professionals in the community when appropriate.

• Provide psychiatric consultation and/or treatment to families.

• Present psychiatric information to community groups and agencies when appropriate.

• Prepare written reports and records of medical services rendered.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Licensure/Certification:

• License to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State of California.

• Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Three years of post-residency experience providing child and adolescent psychiatric care.

Knowledge of:

• Health care management practices and principles including revenue retrieval.

• Principles and practices of supervision.

• Development of medical policies, procedures and protocols.

• Principles and practices of psychiatry including differential diagnosis and treatment approaches.

• Current developments, trends, and research in the medical psychiatric field.

• Psychopharmacology including indications, dosage, interactions, and side effects.

• Laws regarding informed consent.

• Documentation requirements.

• Child development and its relationship to psychiatry.

• Substance use/chemical dependency and its relationship to psychiatry.

• Community mental health practices.

Skill/Ability to:

• Direct child psychiatric programs.

• Clinically supervise and provide lead direction to medical/professional staff, including physicians.

• Fully supervise staff, including selection, performance evaluation, and corrective action.

• Prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence.

• Apply principles of effective management techniques.

• Diagnose psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents.

• Develop and monitor treatment plans and provide psychiatric treatment and management to children and adolescents.

• Learn and apply laws governing medical psychiatric treatment.

• Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with children, adolescents, and families.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
