Job Description

Acts as CTtransit's frontline employee providing safety leadership for all company staff and departments. Duties include training, project coordination and oversight, employee observation and facility inspections while managing supervisory tasks and special projects that achieve the company motto: Safety First, Customer Service Always.

Examples of Duties

  • Supports the assessment of Bus Operator training needs, establishes training objectives, outlines, handouts, updated participant workbooks and, trainer guides, and training activities which will develop required knowledge and skills required by Operators.

  • Executes training by utilizing a variety of training methods, including lecture, discussion, skill practice activities, and media to achieve safety and customer service training objectives and develop participant knowledge and skills.

  • Supports the evaluation, investigation, and grading of Bus Operator accidents and incidents, develops and provides individualized coaching for Operators and initiates training and safety communication interventions to improve defensive driving, prevent accidents and enhance safety.

  • Directs all safety/security programs, includes training related programs and supervises responsibilities of other supervisory personnel conducting safety related duties.

  • In conjunction with the Transportation Department, manages the administration of the Company's uniform program and all Company training programs, including communications to participants, tracking and record keeping, materials inventory, special events coordination, and program evaluation records.

  • Develops and provides special orientations, equipment demonstrations, and training for community groups, as required.

  • In an emergency, shall perform all duties of the Transportation Supervisor, including street supervision, dispatching, work distribution, complaint and accident investigation and bus quality control as needed.

  • Coordinates retrieval and promptly reviews/clips video footage for timely investigation of accidents, incidents or other as needed.

  • Conducts employee safety observations, safety inspections, security audits and has the direct authority to remove employees from service due to unsafe acts or related safety policy violations.

  • Must be able to responsibly record, report, investigate and respond to any accidents or incidents as needed.

  • Ensures proper execution of on-scene accident investigations as conducted by supervisory staff.

  • Administers, develops and implements various personnel policies and procedures related to safety and security of employees.

  • Attends in-service training, seminars or other opportunities for professional development as made available by the Agency. Provides training for Agency personnel as required. Actively participates in staff meetings, trainings, etc.

  • Has thorough working knowledge of Agency policies and procedures.

  • Assists in managing emergencies involving the Safety Department as needed on a 24/7 basis.

  • Work cooperatively with all levels of personnel.

  • May be required to operate revenue vehicles as needed.

  • Administers employee discipline for safety-related policy violations and drafts associated reports and documentation.

  • Will participate in the interview process, and the selection process for new positions including supervisory roles.

  • Assists in other departments and divisions as needed.

  • Additional administrative duties as assigned.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum possession of a bachelor's degree technical education certifications in Transportation, Operations, Safety, Management, Business, Public Administration or a closely related field and five (5) years of relevant work experience is required. A minimum of 2 years of leadership experience is required.

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience on a year for year basis can be substituted for the 4-year degree requirement.

  • Experience in managing employees in a union environment, interviewing, hiring, training, employee development, employee discipline.

  • Knowledge of public transit operations, policies and procedures, Company rules and regulations, traffic laws, routes, union contract provisions, transportation technologies, and other related information is required.

  • Contractual requirements in a transit environment, knowledge of and the ability to model safe driving and customer service skills is required.

  • A valid Commercial Driver's License with the public service endorsements is required. Individual may be required to travel in the course of their daily work.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to multitask, manage multiple employees, ability to conduct training when necessary.

  • The ability to prioritize projects and have excellent oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy, demonstrated ability to present information in a clear, well-organized manner, to provide step-by-step instructions and constructive feedback, and excellent written communications skills are essential.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Willing to work various shifts and respond to emergencies as needed that may be outside of typical business hours.

  • Must be able to handle confidential information.

  • OSHA 30 preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

  • Proficient in software programs (word processing, spreadsheet and database), Internet applications and utilization of all relevant office equipment. The ability to learn quickly internal software programs.
