Job Title: BUS DRIVER (SUMMER PROGRAM)
REPORTS TO: Operations Manager and Assistant Director
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Is responsible for students' safety and orderly transportation on assigned routes of
the Irving Independent School District. Operates a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
with a Class A or B CDL with P and S endorsements and the 20-hour Bus Safety
Certificate.
endorsements-insurable by Irving ISD's insurance carrier (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 21 years of age
Ability to follow instructions (written and verbal)
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Pass an annual physical examination
Possess a CDL License and school bus certification or must obtain a CDL and bus driver
certification within 90 days of employment.
District instructed safety and operational procedure training
Satisfactory driving record
Ability to speak and understand English and to read, write and comprehend instructions
Ability to hear and respond verbally to acts of disruption and safety and behavior concerns
Minimum Experience:
One [1] year of experience in a related field preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES:
1.Safely and efficiently delivers students to and from schools by following assigned bus
routes, adhering to established schedules, and obeying all traffic laws.
2.Maintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing buses using
hand-operated door mechanisms.
3.Maintains discipline and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate Administrator.
4.Maintains a current record of assigned routes and stops, including required seating charts
for elementary and junior high students.
5.Performs prompt, quick bus evacuations of students in emergencies.
6.Keeps the bus's interior clean and always maintains an appropriate fuel level in the bus.
7.Inspect the entire bus for students after each route and before returning to the Transportation
facility.
8.Ability to operate cell phone equipment and communicate with the Transportation Office.
9.Check the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and immediately report
any abnormality or malfunction.

Administers basic first aid when necessary.
Completes specialized training opportunities made available through the Transportation
Department: i.e., CPR, first-aid, behind-the-wheel training, discipline management procedures, etc.
Maintains positive rapport with students, administrators, teachers, staff, and parents.
Understands and observes state laws pertaining to vehicle safety.
Attends required staff development and monthly safety meetings as the Administration and
Director requires.
Assumes responsibility for personal daily timecards.
Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the Irving Independent School District.

Tools/Equipment Used: Operates school buses and all specialized equipment identified to
accommodate special needs students.
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping,
pushing/pulling, and twisting, with extended reaching above the head
Motion: Frequent climbing and walking; driving in reverse 2% of the time, which requires twisting
the upper body and neck while driving. Frequent lifting and pulling on the lever used to open and
close the bus door.
Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs. team lifting is not likely to exceed 150 lbs.
Environment: Exposure to inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow; loads and
unloads vehicle, making frequent stops; ability to safely exit the rear of the bus from 4' elevation;
operates vehicles (up to 60,000 lbs.) up to 100 miles per day in rural and city traffic. Climb steps
in and out of bus up to 16 times per route from a 20 'elevation (3 routes daily), ability to walk 35
yards within 25 seconds; occasional prolonged and irregular hours
Mental Demands: Effective communication skills (both verbal and written); maintain effective
control over groups of students; responds appropriately in emergency situations; maintains
emotional control under stressful conditions
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and
District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal
protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to the supervisor,
and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
