Summer Management Intern

Job Description

The City of Burlington seeks a highly motivated student with an interest in government administration to serve as its summer Management Intern. The purpose of this position is to expose the intern to diverse aspects of local government work and to provide meaningful experience on relevant projects. The intern will assist the City Manager's Office, Finance, and Legal Departments, among others, with identified assignments.

Anticipated Internship Length: June 3 - August 23 (12 weeks)

Examples of Duties

An intern in this position will complete varied work assignments including research, analysis, interviews and job shadowing, attendance in meetings, customer service provision, and a capstone project surrounding a topic of mutual benefit.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma and be currently enrolled at an accredited university or community college.

• A successful candidate will be a self-starter with a positive attitude, who works well with others and demonstrates a track record of producing high-quality work.

• The candidate will also need to have reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• It is preferred that applicants have completed introductory courses in government budgeting and performance management.

• The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an MPA or MPP program or relevant undergraduate course of study with a strong interest in pursuing a career in local government.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Work in this position is sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

• Work involves setting up rooms, providing and setting up refreshments, stocking shelves, and similar activities.

• This employee must have visual acuity to prepare and analyze dates and figures and operate a computer.
