Job Description:

Summer Engineering Intern (K0239548) in the Bureau of Water

  • Multiple Positions Available*

The Municipal Section Engineering Intern:

This role would review and comment for approval sewer extension design specification. Develop complex spreadsheets to review and research raw water quality data.

The Industrial Section Engineering Intern:

This role would review and comment on wastewater and storm water draft NPDES permits applications. Possibly assist in site visits to confirm draft NPDES applications information.

Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma, current/ active college student pursuing an engineering degree.

Valid Driver's License

  • Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Criteria:

  • High school diploma/ GED

  • some engineering courses completed

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access

  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail

  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations

  • Natural Science Knowledge related to environmental control or natural resources

  • Knowledge of understanding and reviewing design specification and plans

  • Technical Skills

  • E-mail, Microsoft Suite, ArcMap, GIS
  • Knowledge of principles of Water Quality, Non-Point/ Point Source Pollution

  • Presentation/ Public speaking experience

  • Experience with written communication/publications

  • Interest in water quality, natural resources and/or environmental studies

Salary:

$14.00-16.00 hourly; can vary depending upon experience and qualifications.

VIEW JOBS 3/20/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-18T00:00 VISTA Assignment Objectives and Member Activities Goal of the Project: The Summer Food Service and VITA VISTA will assist Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas build the capacity of both the Summer Food Service and VITA programs increasing the number of service sites and increasing the number of people served through both programs. Through the Summer Food Service - VISTAs will help break the cycle of poverty by strengthening a program that gives children from low-income families the nutrition needed to learn, play, and grow, increasing their chance for success. Capacity will be built through the recruitment & training of volunteers, the addition of sites in low income rural areas. And the development of educational & recreational activities, by generating measurement tools, developing a stability plan with staff, and the coordination of food distribution and reporting to the state. When summer food is completed this position will transition to build capacity for the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Objective of the Assignment (4/1/2019 9/31/2019) Assess the current state of Summer Food Service Programming/Activities for all sites sponsored by CCNEK. Member Activities: 1. Research the history of sites sponsored by CCNEK 2. Research best practices for developing and implementing Summer Food Service (USDA and KSDE) a. Based on this report, identify strengths and weaknesses of each site current programming and make a plan for improvement. b. Make changes to manual so that programming can be replicated in the future Objective of the Assignment (4/1/19 through 9/30/2019) Develop and implement 3-5 additional Summer Food Service Sites within the 21 counties of Northeast Kansas. Focusing on rural counties where 50% of students receive free or reduced lunch Member Activities: 1. Research local community organizations, educational institutions, and businesses to identify community partners working with school age children. 2. Create marketing materials for target audiences. 3. Develop partnerships with schools to market the Summer Food Service to target audiences. 4. Make changes to manual for implementation so new sites can be organized and replicated in the future. Objective of the Assignment (04/01/2019 through 9/30/2019) Develop and implement a food delivery system for all sites. Communicating with all sites regarding food service rotations, requirements and paperwork policies. Member Activities: 1. Research local community organizations, educational institutions, and businesses to identify community partners in the fields of food purchase and delivery. 2. Research best practices for accomplishing daily food service to school age children ensuring that requirements of program are met. 3. Create policies for each site. 4. Develop a programming manual, so that [programming/policy/procedure/etc.] can be replicated in the future. Objective of the Assignment (10/1/2019 3/31/2020) Develop further capacity for the VITA program being offered to the rural communities and in Johnson and Wyandotte counties through volunteer recruitment. Specifically targeting volunteers and community partners to expand the scope of services for low to moderate families in need of tax preparation services. Member Activities: 1. Develop plan for outreach. a. Identify local organizations, businesses, and volunteer groups who would be qualified and interested in the VITA program. b. Create informational packet to be distributed to the identified local community organizations, business, and volunteer groups identified. 2. Conduct outreach meetings with community organizations, local business, and volunteer groups to increase awareness of the VITA program and qualifications required to volunteer with this program. Objective of the Assignment (10/1/2019 3/31/2020) Develop and outline a comprehensive onboarding and training procedure using current program processes. Member Activities: 1. Research programs current processes in place and interview staff about where improvements can be made. 2. Create a formal onboarding and training manual for all VITA volunteers. 3. Organize onboarding of new volunteers and training for all volunteers who will be involved in the VITA program. Objective of the Assignment (10/1/2019 3/31/2020) Support VITA volunteers in scheduling and troubleshooting logistical issues. Member Activities: 1. Create schedule templets and work with volunteers as they onboard to develop a reasonable and workable schedule for each office supporting VITA services. 2. As issues with scheduling arise, work with volunteers and managers to either find additional volunteers or reschedule appointments. Objective of the Assignment (4/1/2019- 3/31/2020) Produce quality reports that can be used to present overall efficiency and how programming is meeting reporting requirements which demonstrate the anti-poverty and capacity building work being accomplished during your service term. Member Activities: 1. Complete monthly reports of activities and outputs. a. Become knowledgeable about required and expected reporting. b. Develop strong tracking tools that align with the outcomes of your VAD and the performance plan to ensure that you are tracking your outcomes. c. Research ways to share the impact of your work in the community and develop a brief external engagement plan to be used over the course of your year of service. d. Ensure that materials you create during your year include the AmeriCorps VISTA logo and that your service site has the VISTA brand visible within the site. e. Support your site with elevating stories of impact, playing close attention to events, meetings and interactions with elected officials or any other noteworthy engagement. f. Participate in, and engage others in, the national days of service and national days of recognition as requested by your site. g.
