Definition

This is a seasonal position in the Parks and Recreation Department. An individual in this position is responsible for ensuring Missouri City's Summer Day Camp runs efficiently by initiating, developing and maintaining a positive camp atmosphere. Reports to Youth & Family Recreation Specialist.

Examples of Work

  • Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of campers; assist in the enforcement of rules and regulations and eliminates safety hazards; explain and enforce Summer Day Camp and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Oversee all registration and policy-required documents; communicate requirements and expectations with parents; record and report any behavior related incidents with parents; respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.

  • Provide excellent customer service to parents; answer phones; provide information regarding policies and procedures; process registrations and payments; manage revenues generated during shift; balance cash, check and credit card receipts, and generate daily financial reports.

  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate a wide variety of activities for campers; guide group activities with children; actively participate in camp activities; implement a variety of activities for children to include leisure games, sports, individual and group activities, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, and science and math programs.

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate Camp Counselors including instructing and guidance on best practices and strategies for leading children; Delegate daily camp responsibilities to counselors as needed.

  • Maintain reports and logs on camper behavior incidents, staff training, parent concerns, injuries, medical information and supply needs.

  • Assist in scheduling field trips; plan daily schedules and activities; order and prepare supplies; co-facilitate staff meetings; assume responsibilities for logistics.

  • Serve as a positive leader, modeling and upholding the Code of Conduct and influencing others to help maintain discipline and order within the program.

  • Accompanied participants on day trips; monitored the safety of all procedures as they pertain to campers and staff.

  • Open, close, and secure the facility; perform light custodial duties; organize supplies; prepare for activities by setting up supplies, equipment, tables and chairs.

  • Assist the department with special events and programs as needed.

  • Ad hoc responsibilities as needed.

Education, Experience, or Certification

Must be 18 years of age or older at the start of employment. High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate and one (2) year experience in childcare or related field required. Current certification in First Aid and CPR or the ability to obtain one during onboarding required. Potential increase in pay with valid Lifeguard certification.
