Title of Position:

Summer Crossing Guard, Early Childhood Center

Effective Dates of Employment:

  • July 1 - August 1, 2024 (Monday
  • Wednesday the first week. Monday

  • Thursday all other weeks)

Work Schedule:

  • This is a part-time, hourly position.

  • Location is Washington Street and Bolton Street

  • Shifts are: 8:25-8:45, 10:55-11:15, and 1:25-1:15

Salary Range:

$19.48 or current school hourly rate for any current MPS employee up to $25 per hour. (MPS employees may not work shifts that overlap with their regular, daily work schedule.)

Job Summary:

A crossing guard's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the children crossing streets on their way to and from school.

School crossing guards oversee and control traffic flow around schools in the morning and at the end of the school day.

Organizational Relationship or Line of Authority:

Reports to the Summer School Building Administrator. Must also adhere to directives of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Marlborough School Committee.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Create gaps in traffic, where necessary, to help students cross the street safely.

  • Project a positive public image and serve as a positive role model for children.

  • Follow basic principles of student safety at all times.

  • Stand while children are present and be prepared to act quickly in case of an unexpected event or emergency.

  • Report any unusual situations, which are brought to their attention, to the patrol supervisor on duty (e.g., irresponsible motorists, adults harassing students or students harassing other students).

  • Encouraging patterns of proper crossing behavior by school children.

  • Deterring school children from committing unsafe acts.

  • Informing motorists, by appropriate signals, that school children are using or are about to use the crossing.

  • Observe and report incidents and/or conditions that present a potential hazard to the children's or crossing guard's safety.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the building Principal, Director of Athletics, directives of the Superintendent of schools or his/her designee, and Policies of the Marlborough School Committee.

Additional Information:

  • Arrive promptly at their assigned post each day and remain at their post throughout their shift.

  • Call the Summer School Building Administrator at least one hour prior to the start of their assigned shift if unable to cover assigned post due to illness or another emergency.

  • Immediately report to their supervisor any injury sustained while on duty.

  • Be on time and neatly attired.

  • A crossing guard shall not sit in his/her car, conduct personal business or use tobacco in any form while on duty.

  • Refrain from use of foul language or inappropriate behavior while on duty.

  • Not use radios or headphones (other than two-way communication radios), read books, magazines, newspapers or any other written material while on duty.

  • Not agree to requests or directives by school personnel to change or add to their duties until directed to do so by the Building Principal, or his/her designee.

JUDGMENT

The work is well-defined or has detailed rules, instructions and procedures. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of simple, routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in well-known or established procedures.

Locations:

Crossing guards may be stationed only when it is necessary to control or direct vehicular or pedestrian traffic during time periods of a school day, when it is necessary to control traffic during any special event or program involving pedestrian crossings, or whenever it is deemed to be in the best interests of public safety. The criteria for determining crossing guard locations including the following: number of children; accident history; age of children; possible alternative routes; design of intersection; traffic speed; type of traffic control; width of intersection; volume of traffic; physical terrain; and all other factors deemed by the supervisor.

Equipment Provided:

  • If issued by the department, school-crossing guards shall wear a uniform or use the following uniform items and equipment.

  • Fluorescent/retro-reflective vest with "crossing guard" in bold lettering. The vest shall be dot approved.

  • Fluorescent raincoat and/or wind breaker.

  • Stop paddle.

  • Other equipment as deemed necessary in the performance of the position.

Training:

  • School crossing guards shall receive field training by the SRO, or another sworn officer for a period of one (1) week. During this training, they will also be instructed on the traffic laws of the commonwealth.

  • The crossing guards will then be monitored to ensure that they are capable of completing their duties safely and respectfully.

  • If the field instruction reveals performance deficiencies, additional training may be provided.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education (GED)

  • Ability work well with students, staff and community members.

  • Ability to operate independently as well as a member of a team and can use sound judgement in handling matters while maintaining a safe physical environment for all students.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Work is performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills:

The work involves sitting, standing, walking, stooping, arm raising and holding a stop sign.

Motor Skills:

Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.

Visual Skills:

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Visual demands require reading documents for general understanding.
