The summer internship for college students consists of a temporary flexible plan of training to scientific techniques, and performance of laboratory procedures combined with data analysis. The intern will report for 4 to 8 hours per day for 8 to 10 weeks which is designated prior to initiating the internship.
At completion, the intern provides Powerpoint slides as a summary report or provides a draft written report. During the internship the student will maintain an Emergent Laboratory Notebook following EPDG good documentation practices. While in the laboratory the intern will follow safety procedures.
The procedures performed by the intern will consist of ELISA, ELISpot, cell culture, procedures associated with antibody characterization, and manipulation of equipment used for laboratory methods or documentation practices. Some biological materials will be used as assay samples. Corporate requirements restrict data and findings to Emergent staff. Information that leaves the Emergent site for purposes related to the student, such as for applications for monetary scholarships or to meet independent study requirements, will be redacted to protect Company intellectual property.
Adhere to Company safety guidelines. Maintain progress during the internship toward the specific goals outlined for the intern.
Follow good documentation practices. Complete all required training.
Education, Experience & Skills
High School diploma. Registration at a college or university for the previous academic year and for the subsequent academic year.
This is an entry level position designed to provide introductory scientific laboratory experience. No previous laboratory experience is required but will assist.
Type/keyboard, visual acuity, good eye/hand coordination, stand, walk, sit, twist/turn, climb, reach outward, reach above shoulder, hand dexterity, bend, squat/kneel, sense of feel, sense of smell, lift/carry 10 lbs, and pull 10 lbs. Use phone, fax, copier, and computer.
Organize/coordinate, analyze/interpret, calibrate precise measurements, problem solve, make decisions, supervise, plan, communicate, prepare written communications. Equipment operation noise above conversation level with monitored access to a laboratory.
