This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With the general guidance of the Day Camp Site Director, or Program Director, the day camp youth leader will provide active supervision to a specific group of children in accordance to YMCA and Texas Licensing ratios. The Counselor will lead campers through a safe environment of activities while displaying the core values of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise and participate with children during all large and small group activities, and not congregate with other adults in one place.

  • Provide age appropriate group activities based on the curriculum and weekly theme: arts and crafts, group games, team building, physical activity games, opening and closing ceremonies, mealtime, group discussion.

  • Be alert to changes in children's behavior that may signal abuse or neglect.

  • Provide discipline for children that is age appropriate.

  • Maintain respect of the child and never be alone with a camper.

  • Supervise campers' arrival and departures; conducting well check of all children.

  • Possess a working knowledge of safety and emergency procedures and be able to exercise sound judgment, and report any unsafe conditions to supervisor immediately. Serve as Primary Responder for all accidents and incidents.

  • Maintain the camp area, program area, keeping areas of use neat, clean, and safe. Teach campers proper procedures for using, cleaning up, and storing equipment.

  • Communicate effectively and exhibit a professional attitude portraying the values of caring, honesty, responsibility, faith, and respect with all other staff, parents, and children.

  • Complete routine and required forms to include, but not limited to: attendance records, observation records and incident and injury reports.

  • Intervene immediately when children are involved in unsafe play.

  • May be required to work hours outside of normal work schedule for staff meetings, trainings, extended program hours, parent nights or association events.

  • Change activities when children are too excited, angry or tired to play safely.

  • Distribute snack or meals to children.

  • Maintain Continuing Education requirements each year.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Monday-Friday Availability Required. Shifts vary from 6-8 hours in between the hours of 7am-6:30pm.

  • Preferred at least 6 months of childcare experience.

  • Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check prior to beginning employment. Fee paid by employer.

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required. Qualifying Work Study Program also Accepted.

  • Certifications required within the first 60 days of hire: YMCA approved basic life saving skills such as CPR, First Aid, AED.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain harmonious relationships by promoting caring, honesty, respect and responsibility with staff, YMCA members, and program participants.

  • Must be a positive role model to children, displaying emotional maturity and stability at all times.

  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.

  • Previous experience in building positive, authentic relationships with diverse populations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed in an active environment.

  • Incumbent must have the ability to communicate with staff, children and parents.

  • This position requires high levels of attention and alertness.

  • Visual acuity is required for child supervision.

  • Repetitive stooping and bending with regular lifting of up to 20 pounds is required. Ability to stand and walk for long periods at a time is required, as well as, the ability to run and be able to participate in sports.

  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations.
