The Lead Camp Counselor plays a key role in supporting the Summer Camp Director in managing daily camp operations and ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of campers. The Lead Counselor will supervise and mentor a team of camp counselors, guide campers through structured and recreational activities, and serve as a role model for positive behavior and teamwork. This position requires leadership, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for both campers and staff. The hiring salary for this seasonal position begins at $18 per hour.

Position Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision. Supervise a team of Camp Counselors, providing guidance, support, and feedback to ensure campers receive an engaging and safe camp experience. Ensure activities are aligned with the camp's goals. Assist the Camp Director with staff training, team-building activities, and daily camp operations. Serve as a role model for staff and campers by demonstrating excellent leadership, enthusiasm, and professionalism. Handle any camper behavioral or disciplinary issues in a positive and constructive manner, and report any serious issues to the Camp Director.

Camper Engagement. Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where all campers feel welcome and respected. Lead campers in a variety of activities such as sports, games, arts & crafts, and group discussions. Maintain focus on group dynamics and individual needs of all campers. Assist with camper check-ins, group assignments, and ensure timely transitions between activities.

Camper Safety. Ensure the physical and emotional safety of campers at all times by adhering to camp policies and maintaining constant supervision. Supervise campers during daily activities, ensuring their physical and emotional safety at all times. Report any camper behavioral or medical issues to the Camp Director promptly.

Administrative & Operational. Assist with managing camp logistics, such as camper attendance, daily schedules, and special events. Maintain communication with the Camp Director regarding any issues or concerns that arise during the camp day. Document camper progress, achievements, and incidents as required by the camp's safety protocols.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or the equivalent is required. Additional education is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with children in a recreational or educational setting.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required (or the ability to obtain prior to camp start).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Passionate about working with children. Able to remain calm in high-energy or challenging situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a camp counselor or other leadership role in a youth program or similar role.
  • Experience in specific camp activities such as sports, arts, outdoor recreation, or team building.

Work Schedule

Must be available to be scheduled five days a week (Monday-Friday) during the Summer months (mid-May through mid-August).
