We are seeking an impassioned and experienced Archery Instructor to join our team at Camp Grossman. As an archery instructor, you will have the opportunity to create a fun and educational environment for campers while teaching them archery skills and techniques. The Archery Instructor will play a crucial role at Camp Grossman, a highly regarded camp that offers a wide variety of recreational and educational activities. Your responsibilities will include teaching campers the fundamentals of archery, ensuring their safety during all activities, and fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere. Camp Grossman is set in a gorgeous location on 75 acres of the Hale Reservation in Dover. Camp Grossman welcomes over 1600 campers and over 300 staff each summer. The team is a dynamic group that works to create a wonderful experience for children while assisting them in building confidence and skills. Our alumni can tell you that working at Camp Grossman is an amazingly enjoyable way to spend your summer while developing great skills such as communication, leadership, time management, conflict resolution, and teamwork; valued skills that will serve you well in future jobs. 

Orientation takes place the week of June 17th and ends with Visiting Day (a pre-camp visit for all campers and families to meet staff) on Sunday, June 23. The regular camp season begins June 24 and ends August 16 (with the option to work the following “9th Week” for additional pay). The camp day runs from 8:15 AM - 4:15 PM, Monday through Friday, with 3 or 4 staff meetings on various Monday afternoons or evenings. Activity specialists also work 2 additional evenings - either running their activity for campers or assisting with a family night or cookout, depending on their position in camp. While we prefer staff who can start Orientation Week and work the entire regular season, we are happy to consider quality candidates who may have conflicting obligations. 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and set up the Archery Range
  • Engage campers and staff while teaching the proper use of bows and arrows
  • Organize campers and staff so they can engage in the Archery Activity
  • Engage staff to join in and set an example for the campers
  • Develop and implement archery lessons and activities for campers
  • Instruct campers on proper archery techniques, safety procedures, and equipment usage
  • Supervise campers during archery sessions to ensure safety and adherence to rules
  • Create a supportive and inclusive environment for campers of all ages and skill levels
  • Assess and evaluate camper progress and provide feedback for improvement
  • Collaborate with other camp staff to integrate archery activities with the overall camp program
  • Maintain archery equipment and ensure its proper storage and maintenance

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervisory responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee campers and counselors during their archery activity period
  • Ensure and maintain the safe setup of the Archery Range
  • Build and maintain a positive working relationship with other Archery and camp staff.

Requirements

Education:

High School Senior or equivalent experience

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Archery Instructor certification (camp will pay for your training)
  • Ability to teach and manage groups
  • Ability to create a sense of fun
  • Patience, flexibility and a sense of humor
  • Truly enjoy working with children
  • A strong desire to make a difference every day
  • Strong teamwork and relationship-building skills, the ability to multitask, the ability to manage situations effectively and diplomatically
  • Ability and commitment to build strong relationships with campers, co-workers, and camp leadership
  • Knowledge and experience in Archery skills
  • Models maturity, reliability, flexibility and patience
  • Experience and patience with young children
  • Good sense of humor with children and adults
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills including teamwork, relationship building skills, the ability to multitask, the ability to manage situations calmly, effectively and diplomatically
  • Works well independently and with others, building/sustaining collaborative working relationships.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with campers and staff.

Physical Requirements:  Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30-40 pounds. Able to sit and kneel; getting down at eye level with children regularly
