POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of Education Director or the Assistant Education Director, the Success Coach provides academic instruction, tutoring, mentorship, and support to students enrolled in courses offered at the Recovery Education Institute (REI). The Success Coach models self-efficacy, self- advocacy; and paraprofessionalism; provides strength-based peer-to-peer support and/or self-help services to students; and encourages students to work with the REI Academic Advisors to set and achieve their educational and vocational goals. The Success Coach assists the REI team to develop and implement classes and workshops that focus on wellness, recovery and independent living skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides "lived experience" coaching to mentor, train, and support students to acquire and achieve independent living skills, wellness, and basic recovery skills.

  • Develops and provides enrichment, life skills and prevocational workshops and trainings.

  • Assists in organizing assigned learning in various college courses and basic adult education subject areas.

  • Assists students develop skills necessary to succeed in an academic setting including: study, research, presentation, writing and reading comprehension skills.

  • Prepares, researches and assists in the development of workshop curriculum and selects instructional materials.

  • In collaboration with the REI team, develops policies and procedures as related to lived experience, wellness, recovery and education.

  • In collaboration with the REI team, delivers student evaluation surveys, gathers evaluation data, and measures outcomes.

  • In consultation with REI's multi-disciplinary training team, develops effective strategies to engage students in higher learning and participate in REI's educational and pre- vocational/vocational courses.

  • In collaboration with REI academic advisors and faculty members, assists students to become resourceful self-advocates, including researching and accessing educational opportunities within their communities; touring college campuses; and interviewing at and/or applying to the college(s) of their choice.

  • Assists with student recruitment, retention and outreach activities.

  • Assists with program and class/workshop orientations for new and continuing students.

  • Encourages and supports each student's individual strengths, interests, skills and talents using a recovery-focused and strength-based approach.

  • Provides community resources and linkage to peer-focused and peer-run supportive services/programs, including wellness centers and consumer/client networks.

  • Provides teachers and/or administrators with relevant feedback and information on students' progress through observation, regular contact and maintenance of accurate student records.

  • Coaches and assists students to effectively communicate and address their questions and/or concerns with REI's leadership, academic advisors, faculty instructor, and faculty adjunct members, as needed.

  • Works cooperatively with the REI team to ensure the smooth and seamless delivery of educational and pre-vocational/vocational training to students.

  • Provides input towards program and training curriculum and development related recovery- and peer-focused services.

  • Attends staff meetings, participates in required trainings, and is actively involved in the community life of the training program.

  • Adheres to all agency and program policies and procedures.

  • Maintains compliance standards in accordance with HIPAA, State, County, and organizational guidelines to ensure client confidentiality, protected health information (PHI) and quality of care.

  • Maintains appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics in accordance with Pacific Clinics' policies and procedures.

  • Reports to work on time and maintains reliable and regular attendance.

  • Models Pacific Clinics' approach, mission and core values in all communication and correspondence.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires that the Success Coach be self-identified as a person with lived (or family) experience with mental illness and the mental health system. The individual should have the ability to identify recovery principles, explain their recovery process and experience in pursuing higher education.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/INTERACTION:

Position works as part of a multi-disciplinary team and interacts with all levels of organizational staff and management; outside auditors and/or Agency vendors.

Initiates and maintains professional interactions and communication with Clinics' employees and/or others.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position is reserved for an individual or family member of individual who has lived experience with mental/behavioral health condition or the mental health system.

  • B.A. degree required or a minimum of 10 years college-level tutoring experience.

  • Has pursued higher education in the past or currently pursuing higher education in an accredited college or university.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of wellness, recovery, and strength-based principles.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of written communication abilities within the following formats: writing compositions, memorandums and letters, electronic mail (e-mail), general topic outlines, and report summaries.

  • Proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

  • A minimum of six months volunteer or paid work experience, preferably within a mental health/behavioral health or educational setting.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, Korean, Farsi, or Arabic preferred.

  • Class C driver's license, daily access to a car and proof of valid automobile insurance OR demonstrated ability to use public transportation.

  • Must know or quickly acquire basic computer/word processing skills.

  • Flexible work schedule to include evenings, occasional weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand or sit. The employee is required to use hands to produce records and/or documentation in manual or electronic format. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally move or lift up to 10 pounds.
