The Success Advisor works to promote student success and program completion by assisting students to set and meet academic, personal and career goals.  The Success Advisor must have passion for students and the College mission, as the position primarily involves providing guidance and imparting academic skills upon students. The chief aim of this position is to assist students in achieving success. Further, the Success Advisor must have an attention to detail and must comply with applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations through the policy and procedure manual, College Catalog, Board of Trustees Policy, and the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

  • Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative outreach as needed, but at least once per semester.   Outreach can occur in-person, virtually, via email and/or via phone.

  • Assist with student career assessment and career exploration activities, including developing related presentations and workshops.

  • Utilize a case management approach by assisting all first time/new students with staying on their pathway and helping them navigate any challenges that would get in the way of their success. Appropriate referrals and follow-up are expected, as needed.

  • Help the student to plan a course of study and give advice about courses and the adjustment of course loads.  The Success Advisor will inform the students about the prerequisites for subsequent courses in the student's program.  The Success Advisor will also advise students through coursework, program choices, Alabama Transfers guides, Degree Works, career choice software, issues related to the transition to college, and any other issues that may arise in the matriculation process.

  • Discuss educational and career objectives suited to the student's demonstrated abilities and expressed interests.  The Success Advisor helps the student to understand the relationship among courses, programs, transfer, apprenticeships, internships, study abroad programs, and other academic experiences.

  • In order to perform these essential functions, the Success Advisor must be present at work. Therefore, attendance is an essential function.

  • Assist students throughout the registration process and with proper placement into college coursework following College Readiness guidelines.

  • Help the student to understand the expected standards of achievement and likelihood of success in certain areas of study.

  • Assist the student with the transfer process by using the Alabama Transfers Guide, college catalogs and curriculums, transfer equivalency databases, and through communication with college and university partners.

  • Assist with the graduation process.

  • Participate in the planning of effective long-range and short-term goals for the department and college, such as retention, persistence and completion.

  • Success also plan and participate in New Student Orientation Information Sessions held prior to online registration and conduct workshops for student success throughout the year.

  • Utilize software to document student meetings, record visit notes, facilitate retention and interventions.

  • Teach ORI 110 classes.

  • In order to perform these essential functions, the Success Advisor must be present at work.  Therefore, attendance is an essential job function.

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree.

  • Minimum of one year of related experience.

  • Must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently, meet regular deadlines, and maintain the confidentiality of student information.

  • Must have knowledge of College policies and procedures concerning admissions, financial aid, registration, course and program requirements, degree/certificate plans, and the Alabama Transfers articulation agreements.

  • Must regularly engage in professional learning activities.

  • Able to work evenings during registration with occasional weekend hours.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of college student services is preferred.

  • Must be proficient in the use of commonly used office and academic computer programs such as Microsoft Office.

  • Cover letter describing specifically how your experience and qualifications meet the qualifications outlined for the position.

  • Verification of experience (employment) will be required after the interview process and prior to an offer of employment.   Letter(s) must come from current and/or former employers, verifying employment experience to meet minimum required qualifications.  Letter(s) must include employment dates and job title and be on official letterhead with an authorized personnel signature.

  • Separate transcripts from each college attended (photocopies will suffice until employed)
