LOCATION/DEPT: Any school within Clay County Schools

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Office of Human Resources Substitute Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Must be 18 to substitute in grades PK-8.

Must be 21 to substitute in grades 9-12.

Position Summary: Instructs students and facilitates their learning in the absence of the regular teacher.

Education and/or Experience:

Certified Substitute Teachers must hold a current & valid NC Teacher License in order to receive Certified Sub Pay. Those with an expired, invalid, or out-of-state teacher license are considered non-certified substitutes.

Non-certified Substitute Teachers must provide proof of completion of either the Effective Teacher Training provided by Tri-County Community College or the Substitute Teacher Training provided by WRESA.org.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to speak clearly as well as understand and follow written and oral directions.

  • Ability to operate standard computer and word processing equipment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, associates, vendors and the general public.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises students.

  • Meets and provides instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans and schedule in the locations and times designated.

  • Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of students, and maintains a safe and orderly environment throughout the school day.

  • Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned with reasonable rules of conduct which encourages self-discipline and responsibility.

  • Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students.

  • Remains at school the half day assigned or entire school day, unless otherwise instructed to leave by building principal.

  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  • Communicates effectively with administration and staff.

  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret lesson plans, technical procedures, and textbooks. Ability, both orally and in writing, to present information effectively and respond appropriately to questions and concerns from individuals, administrators, parents, and students using correct grammar.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and to understand abstract and concrete variables. Ability to use available information and develop realistic long-term and short-term plans for curricular goals

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to read small print. The employee must frequently bend, reach above the head, as well as forward, and use fine motor skills.

  • Working Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. It, at times, is very quiet in the classroom but often, as in the cafeteria and/or school assemblies, is moderate to very loud. The employee must often meet deadlines and must report to class and/or duty assignments on time. The work environment includes inside and outside areas and could include off campus field trips. The work environment includes exposure to sunlight; risk of being bitten by animals or insects; and exposure to environmental allergens (grass, weeds, pollen, and trees).
