Hours: Varies - as needed (Usually 3 hours/2-3 days a week on average)

General Purpose of Job: To inspire and prepare all students with the confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning. Prepare and serve daily the prescribed meal pattern within the allotment of time needed to operate a lunch time schedule set by the building principal.


  • Prepare a complete Type A meal to include the basic preparation, cooking, baking and serving of food.

  • Operate various types of kitchen equipment such as steamers, ranges, mixers, food cutters and choppers, etc.

  • Arrange food on a serving line and serve a complete Type A meal.

  • Clean on a regularly scheduled basis the kitchen and equipment used in preparing food.

  • Record food usage on inventory cards.

  • Cut/wash vegetables/fruits for salads.


  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Operational knowledge of hand and power implements used in preparing food.

  • Knowledge of food preparation.

  • Human Relations: Serving and helping.

  • Knowledge of sanitation and safety requirements.

  • Ability to bend, twist and lift large pans and containers up to 35 pounds in weight.

Desired Qualifications:
Experience in food service.

This includes compliance with USDA regulations and School District policies; collection, entering and balancing of money; day end; month end; year end and year start. Assist Nutrition Manager with the continuous improvement plans. Responsibilities: Student, staff and parent relationships * Communicate account information with students, staff and parents in a positive, caring and timely manner; * Protect the identity of all students, including keeping private free and reduced eligibility information; * Monitor low and negative balances and follow school procedure for collections; * Educate students and Nutrition Staff on federal meal program so that students are taking a balanced and reimbursable meal; * Assist Nutrition Manager, school nurse and parents with managing students with food allergies; * Facilitate building staff lunch incentive program, and * Attend back to school open houses and meetings to build relationships with students and parents. Financial: * Collect, deposit and balance cash and checks from students and staff in a timely manner; * Ensure credit card payments are uploaded into students accounts before lunch; * Operate Point of Sale (POS) to track meals and ala carte purchases to students and building staff; * Ensure all meals entered meet Federal USDA regulations prior to charging for meal; * Administer account adjustments, money transfers and refund cash per district policy; * Balance daily income and transactions. Follow building policy for day end cash and checks deposits; * Prepare and balance accurate monthly financial reports in a timely manner. Verify all student's identity and their meal eligibility; * Follow year end procedures and prepare accurate and timely year end reports for District office staff and Nutrition Manager, and * Attend in-service meetings and trainings for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions. Other Responsibilities: * Connect the school district mission, core values and district priority work to daily work; * Exercise great sensitivity and empathy in handling students with low and negative meal account balances; * Help students, parents and building staff feel welcome during school orientations, open houses and throughout the year; * Communicate effectively with students, families and building staff to build and maintain positive relationships. Respond to all questions in a timely manner, and * Train nutrition staff on use of POS, Federal meal regulations and a la carte pricing. * Understand and follow USDA and MDE meal pattern regulations; * Follow all local and district health safety codes; * Complete annual health and safety training, and * Follow all current uniform guidelines and Osseo Area Schools Food and Nutrition personal hygiene procedures. * Assist where needed with all kitchen duties Qualifications: * High school graduate or equivalent Knowledge of the following: * Quantity food preparation; * Use and maintain of food preparation equipment; * Food safety and sanitation codes and procedures; * USDA meal patterns and regulations; * Basic computers skills, including but not limited to word processing; spreadsheets, and email programs, and * Data Privacy policies and laws. Skilled in: * Interacting positively with all stakeholders; * Calculating basic math problems necessary to maintain accurate records; * Making quick, logical, and decisive decisions as daily challenges occur; * Problem solving daily that generates timely and appropriate solutions; * Communicating effectively using good interpersonal skills; * Ability to build relationships during a walk-by transaction; * Attending to detail, including but not limited to, general clerical; filing and record keeping skills, including making accurate bank deposits; * Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Program, state and federal regulations; * Utilizing technology that includes but is not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, online ordering systems, email, and * Problem solving and building positive relationships.
