POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, operate a school bus over designated routes while ensuring the health and safety of passengers during bus transportation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS)

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Drive a bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules and safely transport passengers.

  • Escort children across streets and stop traffic as necessary.

  • Transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations, arrive and depart as scheduled.

  • Maintain appropriate behavior among students on the bus and at bus stops.

  • Follow District policies regarding the discipline of students and appropriate contact with parents and other citizens.

  • Complete daily safety check of bus before operation.

  • Keep bus clean and free of debris and follow other bus cleaning procedures.

  • Check and add fuel and water and maintain bus to ensure safe operating condition.

  • Submit daily reports, preventive maintenance reports and other reports as required.


  1. Attend and participate in meetings, training sessions and workshops.
  2. Ensure students are not left on bus without adult supervision, and verify all students have departed bus at the end of all bus routes.
  3. Report mechanical defects to authorized staff.
  4. May use route cards and/or maps to plan best route for field trips.
  5. May provide basic orientation to bus driver trainees who accompany School Bus Driver on regular route.
  6. May instruct driver trainees and newly licensed drivers in bus operation.
  7. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:

  • Safe driving practices.

  • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students.

  • Basic First Aid

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Technical aspects in field of specialty.

  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Drive a school bus and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently

  • Maintain a clean driving record that includes no moving violations, suspensions or at fault accidents

  • Maintain order on a school bus

  • Use good judgment in the application of laws, policies and rules in situations which arise while operating a school bus

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions

  • Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work

  • Adhere to route and time tables

  • Learn the Fontana area and assigned route

  • Maintain simple records

  • Wash, wax, clean, fuel and perform safety inspection of bus

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software

  • Work independently with little or no direction

  • Be detail-oriented, organized, accurate, thorough, and monitor work for quality

  • Utilize interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

  • Make decisions based on sound judgment, honesty and integrity

  • Provide own transportation to sites during workday

  • Maintain insurability by District liability insurance carrier

Physical Requirements:

  • Digital dexterity to operate school bus controls.

  • Ability to read printed matter and computer screens.

  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.

  • Ability to hear and understand speech.

  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, and reach.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 20 pounds.

  • Ability to sit for considerable amounts of time.

  • Ability to climb frequently up and down stairs.

  • Ability to stand and walk in order to escort students on and off bus.

Work Environment:

  • School bus

  • Driving in adverse road and weather conditions

  • Work inside and outside and endure exposure to adverse weather conditions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Six (6) months of experience as a school bus driver
  • or-
  • Successful completion of District or other approved bus driver training programs

Education:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • One (1) year or more of successful experience as a school bus driver.

NECESSARY MATERIALS

License:

  • Valid California Class A or B driver's license with passenger, airbrake and school bus endorsements

Materials:

  • Verified copy of high school diploma or equivalent

  • California DMV Driver's Record (H6)

  • Valid California Special Driver Certificate (CHP 295) for school bus operation with no restrictions, with the exception of Automatic Transmission Only and/or First Aid Test Waived

  • Medical Exam Report (DL 51) certified by a medical professional to indicate medical standards have been met to operate a school bus

  • Valid First Aid certification
