JOB DESCRIPTION - REGISTERED NURSE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Provides preventive health services to facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth, and development. Identifies problems and disabilities and provides such services as case finding, health education, referring and care in order to help prevent serious health problems which would later be more difficult and costly to address. The Registered Nurse: Supports the education process by working to assure the health and safety of the students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following examples are intended as illustrations of various types of work performed

Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children
Provides health assessments: Obtains a health history; Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision and hearing; Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment; and/or Identifies abnormal health findings
Develops and implements a student health plan (ICHP/IHP)
a)Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel
b)Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow through
c)Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies
d)Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students
Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
Plans and implements school health management protocols
Participates in home visits assessing the family needs as related to the child's health
Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses
Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases
Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
a)Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health
b)Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health
c)Counsels with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices
d)Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction
Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community
Acts as a resource person in promoting health
Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school health practices
Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district
Where applicable, participates in the IEP plan development
Works directly with other professional health care providers to administer health care procedures in accordance with health care needs for each student under the direction of written physician orders
Distribute medications and maintain medication records for individual students
Audit and organize student health care at multiple school sites
Train school staff w/direct student contact in individual student health care needs
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and holdsan unrestricted license
Certified in CPR or BLS (or obtain in the first 30 days)
Possess a valid WA State driver's license
Must pass WA State fingerprint requirements
Knowledge of specialized medical equipment (feeding tubes, pumps, etc…)
RECOMMENDATIONS
B.S.N. or Registered Nurse with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline
Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health or pediatric nursing
Previous experience as a nurse in the school setting preferred
DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing
Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health
Current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health
Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies
State and local laws relating to health and social issues
Rules and regulations regarding being a school health technician in the State of WA
ABILITY TO:
Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing
Exercise professional judgment in making decisions
Communicate appropriately and effectively with students, parents, administrators,
other school personnel, etc…
Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
Organize and manage time
Be a self-starter or self-motivated
Ability to work independently but also as part of the school health care team
Use a computer and various software applications
