Paraprofessional- General Education Position DescriptionTITLE:Paraprofessional-General EducationCLASSIFICATION:ClassifiedDEPARTMENT:General EducationFLSA:Non-exemptREPORTS TO:Chief Academic OfficerWORK YEAR:186 Working DaysBOARD APPROVAL:SALARY:Classified Salary ScheduleBASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, assist teachers in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; prepare instructional materials and perform a variety of clerical duties as assigned to meet the needs of students.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:Assist teachers in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, and practices and assignments in various subjects. Provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, operating equipment, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials; take direction from teachers concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.Correct and record tests, and record results on student profiles and other records of students.

Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer, copier, paper cutter and laminator; operate related classroom equipment as required. Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; clean, set up, and set out instructional materials and equipment.Assist students regarding the building of self-esteem, and the development of a value system; assist students providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.Catalogue and prepare books, videos, and reference materials for circulation; check books in and out; prepare fine letter; reshelf, display, repair and inventory books; assist students with library research.Oversee groups of students in lunchroom, recess and other playground activities as needed; assure safe outdoor play.OTHER DUTIES:Participate in parent conferences, IEP meetings, telephone calls as needed.Translate oral and written communication, as needed.Perform related duties as assigned.TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:High School Diploma and A.A.

Degree or High School Diploma and demonstrate college level skills by passing a proficiency test.Familiarity working with students in a school environment.KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES:Knowledge of:Basic child guidance principles and practices.Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.Elementary school mathematics, reading, spelling, grammar, language, social studies, science, physical education.Basic instructional methods and techniques.Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.Oral and written communication skills.Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.Basic record-keeping techniques.ABILITY TO:Assist teachers in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment.Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and provide routine clerical support.Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.Print and write legible.Assist in the preparation of instructional materials.Understand and follow oral and written directions.Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, using patience and courtesy in manner that reflects positively on the school.Perform computational tasks with speed and accuracy.Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.Observe health and safety regulations.Apply integrity and trust in all situations.Maintain records and files.Lift light objects according to safety regulations.Be flexible and work effectively with constant interruptions.Conform to and support the assigned teacher's style of classroom management.Monitor and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.Learn School organization, operations, policies, objectives and goals.WORKING CONDITIONS:SAMPLE ENVIRONMENT:This position works in a variety of settings including classrooms and outdoors and may experience heat or cold extremes as well as fumes, odors, and dust; noise level is moderate to loud. Requires paraprofessional to work effectively under stressful situations and respond to the unpredictable behaviors of students.SAMPLE PHYSICAL ABILITIES:Continual speaking; standing for long periods of time; frequent sitting, reaching, walking, bending, grasping and pinching; occasional lifting and carrying, squatting, twisting or kneeling.HAZARDS:Occasional contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals; exposure to erratic behavior; may risk exposure to lice, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
