BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform skilled surface preparation and painting of District facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

  • Work off of work orders to do projects, touch-ups and special applications. (E1)

  • Make and install signs for parking, directions and playground rules; orders signs when necessary. (E1)

  • Utilize brush, roller or spray gun in applying paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, lacquer or other protective or decorative finishes to interior and exterior surfaces. (E1)

  • Scrape, sand, water blast, size, patch, plaster, fill and in other ways prepare surfaces for painting or repainting. (E1)

  • Apply under and finish coats. (E1)

  • Erect, rig and move scaffolding and platforms. (E2)

  • Operate a variety of equipment including paint sprayers, high pressure washers, sanders, grinders, drill presses, high lifts, ladders, etc. (E2)

  • Select paint types and colors. (E2)

  • Maintain records of time sheets and work orders, paint samples, and repair manuals. (E2)

  • Clean brushes, tools and other equipment. (E3)

  • Assist with a wide variety of general maintenance work in other skilled or unskilled trades whenever available. (E3)

  • Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)

  • Order and purchase own supplies.

  • Lay out, mark and stripe parking lots and play areas.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A. Graduation from High School or equivalent.

B. Supplemental coursework or training equivalent to a painting apprenticeship program and two (2) years of journey-level painting experience.

Or

Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.

  • A valid California Drivers License.

  • Current DMV printout.

  • Insurable by District liability insurance carrier.

  • Valid First Aid Certification.

  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Brush, roller and spray painting practices and procedures.

  • Preparation of various surfaces.

  • Application of paints and finishes to various surfaces.

  • Safety precautions in handling and storage of painting materials.

  • Safety procedures pertaining to ladders, swing stages, rigging and scaffolds.

  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:

  • Apply paints and prepare surfaces by hand or with power equipment.

  • Mix and match colors.

  • Erect and work from ladders, rigging and scaffolds.

  • Meet schedules and time lines.

  • Follow oral and written instructions.

  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

  • Sit and drive in a vehicle.

  • Work cooperatively with others.

  • Communicate effectively.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

  • Kneeling, standing or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Seeing to read and understand written materials.

  • Bending or twisting at the waist to operate equipment.

  • Reaching overhead and horizontally.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment.

  • Lift or move up to 75 pounds.

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor, outdoor and industrial shop environment.

  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.

  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and fumes from various chemicals associated with working with paint and paint products.

  • Occasionally works evenings or weekends.

HAZARDS:

  • Occasionally works at heights on scaffolding, ladders and platforms.

  • Exposed to vapors from paints and solvents.

  • May be exposed to toxic fumes and hazardous materials.

  • Noise level is usually loud.
