LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LEAD MECHANIC BASIC FUNCTION:

Lead and work with a crew of mechanics in the repair of gasoline and diesel powered buses. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: E=Essential Duty Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class.

Perform major and minor repairs to automotive and bus equipment, including installing new ignition systems, aligning front wheels, changing or recharging batteries, replacing transmissions and other parts using hand tools, tuning and overhauling gas and diesel engines using mechanics hand tools, welding equipment, standards charts and hoists; perform body work and painting; rewire ignition systems, lights and instrument panels; replace and adjust headlights. E Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers. E Supervise the diagnosing, scheduling and repair of District vehicles and equipment.

E Plan and assign work to a small group of mechanics. E Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.

E Plan and carry out an effective preventive maintenance program.

E Assure that repairs meet mandated safety standards. E Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in work connection areas. E Respond to service calls and accidents; make emergency repairs or tow buses or vehicles.

E Ride with drivers to diagnose malfunctions as required. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles of internal combustion engines, both gas and diesel.

Repair methods for various components of school buses and automotive equipment.

Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of heavy duty automotive equipment. Principles and methods used in a program of preventive maintenance for fleet equipment.

ABILITY TO:

Communicate effectively in the English language. Diagnose and repair complex mechanical malfunctions.

Direct the work of journey-level mechanics.

Work cooperatively with others. Read and understand technical repair manuals, electrical diagrams and specifications.

Estimate the cost of repairs.

Order supplies and equipment. Use basic math to interpret measuring instruments.

Use the tools and equipment necessary in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty fleet equipment.

Maintain records. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by training and experience which demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of and ability to diagnose and repair automotive and heavy duty equipment, both gas and diesel.

Experience in the repair of large buses and trucks is preferred. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class B driver's license or higher.

Incumbents in this position are required to furnish their own standard automotive mechanic hand tools. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Shop environment.

Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Noise and fumes from equipment operation. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools and equipment. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.

Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Standing for extended periods of time. HAZARDS: Working around and with machinery having moving parts Board Approved 11/2/99
