About the Position

Educational Interpreters use sign language and voice interpretation to facilitate communication between Deaf and hard of hearing students and others, including peers, teachers and other staff within the educational environment. This position interprets communication and dynamics between deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) persons and hearing persons; uses American Sign Language or the manual sign language system appropriate for communication with a specific DHH person or group; monitors DHH person for indications of understanding, questions or comments; adapts signing to varying student needs and abilities and to the affect of the speaker to objectively express the tone and mood as well as content of material.

Educational Interpreters must familiarize themselves with subject matter being taught. This position also provides feedback to teachers and educational team regarding the student's understanding of subject matter; may tutor students when appropriate; serves as a resource for District staff regarding interpretation process and DHH student concerns; provides professional support and assistance to other interpreters in the program. Interpreters must use good judgment in their role, following the Code of Ethics and guidance from the program staff. Interpreters must maintain a dress code of clothing and accessories that facilitate students' reading of signs.

This position provides interpretation in classrooms and for various other situations, such as assemblies, meetings, test administration, phone calls, extra-curricular activities, and may include accompanying high school students in community placements or vocational classes where the interpreter will provide communication support and academic and behavioral support.

A BA/BS and familiarity with or experience working within a K-12 educational system is desired, but not required.

Salary

Salary Schedule: Prof-Tech level 9; $40.26 per hour
