Description: Provide a safe clean environment for students, staff and public. Assist Head Custodian in cleaning, maintaining, and daily operation of school building. Act as replacement during Head Custodian's absence as directed by the administration.

Essential Functions:
Ensure safety of students
Perform minor repairs, including, but not limited to, glass replacement, electrical repairs, wood repairs, painting and metal repairs
Request needed equipment, materials and supplies
Maintain a clean, safe and neat boiler room
Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors
Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails and pencil sharpeners
Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and bathroom tissue in all school building restrooms
Remove cobwebs, clean windows and chalkboards
Check boiler room nightly for orderliness, safety, etc.
Secure building nightly
Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials
Clean and sanitize school building restrooms
Repair equipment and buildings as needed
Conduct periodical inspections of the building
Complete paperwork as required by the supervisor
Promote good safety practices and procedures
Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
Attend meetings and in-services as required
Secure building each working day
Maintain a daily work routine as established by Head Custodian to adequately service the buildings, grounds and personnel
Check and prepare controls for water, lights, heat and cooling facilities as assigned
Check building to assure maximum security
Sweep, clean, mop, wash, wax, dust, wipe and vacuum all surfaces to maintain cleanliness throughout building and grounds and supervise other employees doing the same
Perform seasonal duties such as grass mowing, raking, salting and snow removal, litter removal, sprinkling, landscaping, trimming, etc., as directed by Head Custodian
Keep work and storage areas neat and orderly
Tour building periodically and remain alert for dangerous, hazardous conditions or items in need of maintenance
Set up equipment and furniture for special events and use of building for school and community functions
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian/Supervisor
Maintain records as requested by Head Custodian
Oversee work schedules of custodial helpers and cleaning employees and directs the work in a prompt and efficient manner
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate and perform routine maintenance on the heating system
Pass on to other employees' instructions and requests received from Head Custodian and Building Principal
Maintain building security system ensures building is secure and locked
Maintain accurate inventory of all custodial equipment, materials and supplies
Perform routine maintenance as required
Assist with major repairs as assigned
Assist in the control of all maintenance and custodial tools and supplies
Assist work crews on assigned tasks
Perform electrical, plumbing duties as required
Perform yearly inventory of work area, supplies and equipment
Qualifications:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
One to two years related experience
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Must be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, painting
Must be able to demonstrate the ability to use most common hand tools
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of electrical and plumbing repairs
Basic skills in plumbing, electrical, roofing, building maintenance and HVAC

Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
Working knowledge of assigned building and alarm systems
Must be knowledgeable in the correct way to repair a variety of materials, i.e. floor tile replacement, repairs to wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc.

Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
Occasional operation of vehicle under inclement weather conditions i.e., being prepared to come to work on all scheduled work days, except calamity days

Frequent requirement to stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, and stretch with hands and arms
Frequent excessive standing, e.g., to perform repairs
Occasional requirement to walk in excess of 2-3 miles per day, e.g., cleaning, making deliveries
Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., waxing, mopping, sweeping
Frequent excessive exposure to noise, e.g., power tools, vacuum sweeper
Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions
Occasional requirement to push and pull various items up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels)
