JOB TITLE: Custodian

DEPARTMENT: Maintenance

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

CONTRACT: IEA-NEA/Custodians

COMPENSATION: Per Negotiated Contract Agreement

SUMMARY

Keep the District's school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. (See also appropriate Employee Handbook, Board Policy Manual, and Evaluation Tool.) ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc. in the building and grounds according to schedules; daily and periodical.

  • Restocks disposable items and provides inventory usage and data.

  • Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment as directed by building principal.

  • Maintains building and grounds security in the building each school day making sure all exits are open and all panic bars are in proper working order.

  • Is responsible for opening and closing of the building each school day and securing all doors, windows, and lights except night-lights before leaving.

  • Maintains all walkways, parking areas, and school grounds.

  • Raises the United States flag at/or before 8:00 a.m. and lowers it at 3:30 p.m. each day if the flag is not lighted. Reports and requests new flag when flag becomes worn and tattered.

  • Maintains appropriate temperature levels throughout the building.

  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance upkeep, and repair.

  • Transports materials and/or equipment from one building to another within the District when requested.

  • Reports any damage to school property to principal immediately.

  • Remains on school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use

of the building has been authorized and custodial attendance is required by the principal.

  • Uses District radios appropriately.

  • Is able to organize work tasks and complete them with a minimum amount of direction and supervision.

  • Attends scheduled training sessions as required by District.

  • Complies with all preventative safety measures implemented by District or building administrator.

  • Displays loyalty to District No. 53, the School Board and its governance, policies and contracts.

  • Supports the Mission and Vision of the District.

  • Maintains a professional appearance.

  • Maintains a professional and positive rapport with parents/co-workers/administration/School Board.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization. Ability to communicate effectively using the District radios.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurements, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative (customarily associated with) of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee regularly uses hand strength to grasp tools and to climb onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck or trunk more than the average person while performing this job. Snow shoveling is a seasonal requirement. Setting up lunch tables and risers is a requirement at various times throughout the year. Occasionally travel between buildings by personal vehicle is a requirement of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, equipment, trash and paper supplies. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 70 pounds such as paper, books, and furniture. The employee sometimes pushes/pulls items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will wear required safety equipment such as safety belts when lifting over 40 pounds, goggles, and rubber gloves.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet timelines with severe time constraints. The employee may occasionally have working hours altered. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud at times.
