REPORTS TO: Building Principal- Immediate Supervisor
Director of Support Services/Superintendent- General Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) test requirements.
Knowledge of school facilities and ability to service them.
Knowledge of cleaning supplies and equipment.
Knowledge of minor maintenance tools.
Demonstrates positive attitude, interest and motivation.
Ability to speak, write, and read.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Custodian is responsible for the day to day care necessary to ensure the upkeep and safety of all district facilities and equipment as assigned by the individual building principal, designee or director during the school year and summer months. Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs minor maintenance routinely as needed or directed.
Performs daily inspection of buildings and grounds, taking corrective action when possible.
Informs Principal or supervisor of needed supplies and equipment.
Assumes responsibility for the general safety, including fire safety of the building.
Assumes responsibility for the general security of the building.
Performs emergency repair, cleaning services, and grounds maintenance as necessary.
Agrees to fulfill performance in location(s) assigned, with a positive attitude and a willingness to work in team cooperation with other custodians and staff.
Assists in snow removal.
Assists with general mechanics in remodeling and renovation work.
Replace broken windows when possible.
Reports to work on time and fulfills the hours required by the district.
Accounts for the time-on-task and reports to the Principal when leaving or returning to the building at all times.
Complies with local, state and federal regulations and policies.
Sets up tables, chairs, and special equipment for a wide variety of meetings, programs, seminars, and other similar events.
Attends in-service training and professional development as assigned to upgrade skills and stay informed of regulations and performance needs.
Adheres to the daily and weekly breakdown of tasks as assigned by the building principal.
Follow the chain of command at all times.
Performs duties after normal working hours when emergency situations arise.
Perform other tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the supervisor(s).
PERFORMANCE TRAITS:
Aptitudes - ability required to understand oral and written instructions. Motor coordination required to coordinate eyes, hands, fingers, and feet when cleaning. Visual ability to discriminate between clean and unclean, broken and unbroken, unrepaired and repaired. Sense of smell to detect odors and discern. Auditory skills capable of hearing equipment operate properly.
Interests - pride in work by keeping facilities clean and properly working.
Temperament - enjoys working around people, ability to perform repetitive duties of cleaning restrooms, classrooms, offices, lawn and recreation areas etc.
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES:
Generally stored within the building in which the custodian is assigned. A partial list and approximate weights are as follows:
Chairs stacked- 60 lbs.
Tables- 50 lbs.
Wet/dry vacuums- 58 lbs.
Commodities- 10-25 lbs.
Buffer- 103 lbs.
Floor Wax 5 gallon- 46 lbs.
Upright vacuum- 26 lbs.
Ice Melt- 50 lbs.
Lawn Mowers- 60-90 lbs.
Paper Towels- 28 lbs.
Tissue Paper- 36 lbs.
Edger- 61 lbs.
Tumbling Mats- 30-40 lbs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
I. SITTING TASKS
a. Sitting is an occasional but essential requirement of the job up to 33% of the time
b. Driving/riding in truck
c. Equipment repair/maintenance
d. Duties performed during sitting are: moving supplies; hauling trash; changing parts and/or replacing part of equipment
II. WALKING TASKS
a. Walking is a continuous requirement of the job over 66% of the time
b. Mopping
c. Sweeping
d. Duties performed during walking are: sweeping concrete, linoleum, carpeted and hardwood surfaces; mopping concrete, linoleum and hardwood surfaces; shampooing carpets; and stripping and waxing floors.
III. STANDING TASKS
a. Includes all tasks while standing and walking.
b. Dusting, waxing, cleaning, buffing, shining, scraping, etc.
c. Shoveling, raking, cutting, etc.
d. Scrubbing, wiping, scouring commodes, urinals and sinks.
e. Duties performed during standing are: Clean, dust, wax, buff, shine all surfaces, shovel snow, clean, scrub, scour, wipe commodes, urinals and sinks, clean fixtures walls, corners, entrances, baseboards, windows, window sills, mirrors, pictures, picture frames, furniture, etc.
IV. SPRINTING/RUNNING
a. Sprinting/running is an occasional but essential requirement up to 33% of the time
b. In case of emergencies - machinery or equipment failure; personnel or student injury
V. FLEXIBILITY
a. Continuous bending or twisting of the neck
b. Continuous bending or twisting of the trunk
c. Continuous squatting, stooping or kneeling
d. Continuous movement of arms, trunk and legs
e. Reaching forward or above the head is an occasional to continuous requirement
