Special Education Director/Building Principal

POSITION: 1:1 Sped Paraprofessional

LOCATION: Secondary School

HOURS: 6.75 hours/day, 189 days/year

Representation: Public School Employees

Salary: PSE Salary Schedule

Position Description: Under the direction and supervision of certificated staff, the Para-Educator performs tasks related to the monitoring and supervising of students on campus during the day including assisting with instruction, one on one tutoring, classroom management, organization of instructional materials, provide support and assistance in computer laboratory, library or media centers, and assist with the parental involvement activities under the direct supervision, planning and preparation of the teacher. Provide assigned supervision and clerical support.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitors student activities such as drill, practice, and test-taking after lessons and instructions have been given by the teacher.

  • Monitors student behavior and assists in maintaining an orderly classroom atmosphere for the purpose of providing an optimum learning environment, including students with disabilities.

  • Assists with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials.

  • Performs clerical and supportive tasks for staff that are primarily non-instructional in nature.

  • Corrects student papers, record grades, prepare supplemental materials, etc. as assigned.

  • Monitors students in a variety of settings before, during, or after school.

  • Works with students individually and/or in small groups on specific learning tasks and objectives.

  • Adapts to a variety of working situations and learns new skills.

  • Knows and follows health, safety and emergency procedures of the district.

  • Works as a positive team member.

  • Communicates successfully with staff, students, and parents.

  • Demonstrates professionalism through punctuality and minimal absences.

  • Promotes and practices professional growth and development.

  • Follows district guidelines and procedures with regard to student conduct and discipline referrals.

  • Provides positive behavioral support and management.

  • Uses effective strategies to resolve issues.

  • Utilizes appropriate strategies and techniques to provide instructional support in the teaching and learning process.

  • Maintains academic competency for the purpose of providing effective assistance to students.

  • Practices ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality regarding student and personnel information.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Training in state core competencies.

Required Skills, Knowledge and or Abilities

  • Ability and desire to work with students.

  • Ability to read and interpret general business material.

  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.

  • Ability to effectively respond to questions from administrators, staff and students.

  • Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics.

  • Ability to use technology to assist the teaching and learning process.

  • Ability to solve practical or complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude at all times.

  • Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct.

  • Ability to interact and work with students.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff, students.

  • Ability to know and follow health, safety and emergency procedures of the district.

  • Ability and skill in organizing tasks and duties.

  • Ability to use a computer.

  • Ability to follow instructions.

Other: Must meet or be willing to to meet the following qualifications upon hiring if requested or required:

  1. (A) completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associate's degree ( or higher degree); or pass the state PESB para test.

(B) meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment (i) knowledge of , and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics; or (ii) knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
