Substitute bus drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and various school-related events when regular bus drivers are absent. They play a critical role in ensuring the safety and welfare of students while adhering to all traffic laws and school district policies.

Substitute bus drivers are essential in ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of students to and from school. Their commitment to adhering to safety regulations, maintain a well-functioning bus, and providing a safe and secure environment is crucial for the well-being and education of students.

Key Responsibilities:

1.Safe Transportation:

  • Operate a school bus following all traffic laws, safety regulations, and district policies.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students during transportation, including during embarkation and disembarkation.

  • Manage student behavior and enforce bus rules to maintain a safe environment.

2.Route Familiarity:

  • Be familiar with assigned bus routes, stops, and schedules.

  • Follow designated routes, ensuring timely arrivals and departures.

  • Keep abreast of any route changes or detours and communicate them to the dispatcher as necessary.

3.Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure that it is in safe operating condition.

  • Report any defects or maintenance issues to the transportation department.

  • Keep the bus clean and well-maintained.

4.Emergency Procedures:

  • Be prepared to respond to emergency situations, such as accidents, breakdowns, or student medical issues.

  • Be familiar with and follow emergency procedures to ensure the safety of students.

5.Communication:

  • Maintain open and effective communication with students, school staff, parents or guardians, and transportation department personnel.

  • Report incidents, accidents, and behavioral issues to the appropriate authorities.

6.Compliance:

  • Adhere to all school district and state regulations and policies governing school bus transportation.

  • Ensure that all required paperwork, including route sheets and student lists, is completed accurately and submitted promptly.

  • Maintain a valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with passenger endorsement.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Valid CDL with passenger endorsement.

  • Clean driving record with no major traffic violations.

  • Completion of required training, including bus driver training and safety courses.

  • Ability to manage a large vehicle safely, with good spatial awareness.

  • Effective communication skills and a professional and courteous demeanor.

  • Ability to work well with students and maintain discipline on the bus.

  • Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
