Substations Supervisor (Electrical Power Systems Engineer, Principal)

Seattle City Light has a supervisory opportunity in our Substation Engineering Production Group for a professionally licensed electrical engineer, from any state. If you're bringing your PE from another state, you will have a year to obtain your Washington State PE by exam or comity.

In this role, you will conduct design review for, and mentor, six employees in the group. You will oversee the work of one Associate Electrical Engineer, three Assistant Electrical Engineers, and two Electrical Engineering Interns. The Substation Engineering Production Group is responsible for MCR Meter, Control and Relay design support for Substation Engineering's ten Capital Improvement Programs. You will be the lead subject matter expert for Substation Engineering Station Service, Processes, As-builts and CAD work. Work includes transformer, breaker, relay, disconnect, meter, station service and bus work replacements, and additions for City Light's sixteen major substations. This position reports to the Substation & Communication Engineering Senior Manager.

HERE IS MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:  

• Planning, scheduling, assigning, and tracking the daily work of the group's six employees;

• Using your technical expertise to maintain quality control by ensuring internal review of the group's work product, in accordance with state engineering licensing requirements.

• Coordinating work plans with the supervisor of the project engineering group in the substation unit, with the goal of optimizing total engineering unit work flow;

• Continuing the on-the-job education and professional development of each employee;

• Reviewing, managing, and counseling employee performance. Promoting staff to advanced employee classifications based on meritorious performance;

• Reporting work progress to management;

• Maintaining a plan for ensuring state-of-the-art expertise, working techniques, office technology upgrades, safety code updates, and staff engineering expertise;

• Developing ideas to improve work-group productivity, labor efficiency, and work-product quality. Reviewing work practices and tools used by other similar engineering work groups, both locally and elsewhere;

• Working with the supervisors of other engineering groups in the Utility and throughout City government in order to standardize engineering office tools and practices;

• Actively seeking feedback from operations and maintenance staff customers, and incorporating customer suggestions to improve work quality

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is required. A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.

Experience: This class requires a total of eight years experience: Six years professional electrical power systems engineering experience equivalent to the Electrical Power Systems Engineer level. An additional two years supervisory, lead or project management experience is required to be a supervising Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer.

Certification/License: Current Washington State driver's license. Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Washington is required. If you are licensed in another state, you must obtain your Washington PE by exam or comity within 12 months of hire.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

• Utility substation or generation engineering experience and experience with managing projects related to electric utility engineering design and construction.

• Familiarity with NERC Reliability Compliance, NESC and State regulations.

• Able to develop and write construction guidelines, material/equipment specifications and operating procedures. Design experience in substation engineering.

• Computer skills such as AutoCad, Word, Excel, Access, MS Project and Windows.

• Ability to write clear, understandable, and professional letters, memos and reports.

• Ability to adapt to shifting and multiple priorities.

• Ability to work as a team member in a diverse workforce.

• Knowledge of SCL infrastructure, construction specification and work practices.
