The Substation Engineer II will work under the direct (or limited in some cases) supervision of an experienced licensed professional engineer and is expected to develop skills in the field of substation engineering and the ability to work with increasing independence.

Responsibilities: In this role the qualified individual will be expected to: Perform Physical Electrical, Protection and Control, SCADA Systems, Station Communications and Station Automation design on small to medium sized utility substation engineering projects with medium complexity.

Perform medium to advanced complexity engineering calculations to support engineering design.

Assist senior engineers with engineering studies.

Prepare project deliverables including but not limited to engineered drawings, technical reports, project-related correspondence and miscellaneous project documentation.

Collaborate with other engineering disciplines as required.
Should be able to assess the impacts of design changes on other disciplines to pick the best solution.

Perform Quality Control reviews on smaller projects.

Prepare portions of smaller proposals under the direction of project engineers.
Provide drawing counts and man-hour estimates for small to medium sized projects.

Assist the team with the development of processes and procedures to improve project execution efficiency.

Maintain accurate records and files and a high level of organization.

Take opportunities to improve technical knowledge and understanding of the work.

Develop and provide moderate complexity technical presentations to the team to assist with training and staff development.

Assist project engineer with project-related technical support to field personnel during construction.

degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university 2 4years of prior relevant experience in utility substation engineering with a B.S.
degree or 2 years of prior relevant experience in utility substation engineering with a M.S.
degree Solid understanding of the utility grid (power generation, transmission and distribution) system Solid understanding of the function and application of major substation electrical and control house equipment Competence in applying basic theories and principles involved in substation engineering Keen focus on quality and an appreciation for high quality deliverables.

This position will get to work with retrofits/upgrades of substation projects across the United States. This role is responsible for the coordination and execution of all engineering disciplines for medium-voltage and high-voltage substation projects utilizing both Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), in the 34.5 – 550 kV range with an emphasis on project safety, cost, quality and reliability.You'll work as part of our Power Grids team, which serves utility, industrial, and commercial customers with products and services to help distribute electricity efficiently and reliably, maintain power quality, and control and manage electrical networks.This position does allow the selected candidate to sit in various locations based upon manager's discretion. Those locations can be near Princeton, New Jersey, Raleigh, North Carolina, Houston, Texas or Kansas City, Kansas. 2018-12-17 Senior professionals ( > 5 years of work experience) Tasks: Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following * Manage and lead all engineering activities, both in-house and outsourced, during the proposal, design and construction stages of substation projects with strict adherence to the project contract. * Support proposal efforts by introducing and promoting innovation, cost saving ideas, and value-added solutions to the overall system design concept. * On-site assessment and evaluation of existing equipment, steel structures, foundations, etc. * Providing expertise and support to the proposal and project teams in validating sub-contractor bids, and in negotiating sub-contracts for electrical substation and switchyard projects * Conform ABB Bid packages with Customer Project Documents: * Review customer Request for Proposals / Quotations (RFPs / RFQs), and ABB's proposals to ensure conformance with the bid package by: * Identifying and clarifying technical ambiguities and conflicts in the documents * Identifying potential or probable risk during construction and installation. * Developing mitigation strategies for identified risks * Work with the proposal team to ensure that the sub-contractor scope of work is clearly defined and risks are properly allocated between ABB and the sub-contractors * Validate Sub-Contractor Bids: o Lead sub-contractor bid reviews to resolves inconsistencies, oversights and mistakes. o Provide engineering and equipment cost recommendations to the proposal team based on the bid review analysis. * Notify the responsible Business Development Manager (during bid stage) or Project Manager (during project execution) of any difficulties encountered in the engineering and design that may adversely impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule of the ABB project deliverables, and provide recommendations for solutions. * Prepare, update and support the project execution engineering activities in the schedule with emphasis on delivery Time, Quality of deliverables and controlling project Costs. * Develop the Design Criteria and the Document Deliverables list for the project. * Lead the development of single-line diagrams, layout drawings, raceway systems, grounding systems, station service and bill-of-material (BOMs) for substation design packages. * Utilize knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code to ensure that designs comply with the required safety clearances. * Perform technical, cost savings, and constructability reviews of design packages from internal engineering, outsourced sub-contractor engineering and equipment factories. * Generate equipment specifications, monitor vendor technical compliance and witness factory acceptance testing (when required). * Provide substation project management support, including managing engineering scope according to technical contracts, equipment procurement, developing change orders, and maintaining project schedules. * Adhere to ABB quality processes and document control procedures to ensure design documents are complete and accurate. * Provide construction, installation & commissioning support as-required. Requirements: Basic Qualification: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of eight (8) years of technical, commercial and construction experience on high voltage substation Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) projects * OR- * Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of six (6) years of technical, commercial and construction experience on high voltage substation Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) projects * Professional Engineer License in at least one (1) US state, with ability to secure other state licenses as-required * Candidates must already have a work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in the United States.
