Substation Control Standards Designer/Engineer - Standardization Coordinator

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta) however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be physically present in-office and/or field location on a routine (see below) and as-needed basis.+ Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).+ Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports to the Substation Control Standards Supervisor for Southern Company Services, Technical Shared Services (TSS), Substation Engineering and will be located in Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA.  The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support, coordination, and development of Control Design Standard Drawings for the Substation Control Production Design groups.  The Substation Control Design group is responsible for engineering, design, and coordination of substation projects including development of protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems, material specifications, and transmitting drawing packages.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety continues to be our number one priority using a Safety-First mentality and leading by example
  • Maintain Substation Control Standards SharePoint Site and associated documentation+ Provide support to Substation Production Design and other groups as it relates to the use and development of Southern Company Standards
  • Participate in, support and lead initiatives for Southern Company Transmission and Substation Engineering
  • Support the development of design standards and criteria for use on the Southern Company System
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings necessary for the development/updating of Control Standards

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • BS in Engineering or relevant technical discipline is preferred
  • Experience in document control and/or standardization of design/drawing processes is highly preferred
  • Experience with SharePoint management is required
  • Experience with design, maintenance, or operation of substations desired
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred
  • SCST Vault, AutoCAD Electrical, SDS Tools, and AutoDesk Vault experience would be a plus
