  • This position will be filled as a Substation Apprentice 1st Year, or 2nd Year based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

The below job description is that of a Substation Apprentice 1st Year and the qualifications, duties and responsibilities increase/adjust according to the level that the position is filled.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Under close supervision, as an apprentice in training, must be willing and able to perform the less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, substations, underground systems, and related equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

  • Assist in the erection of wood and steel structures, including foundations;

  • Work on energized conductors up to 500 volts;

  • Install miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings during construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits;

  • Perform transmission and distribution switching;

  • Tie knots and splice rope;

  • Assist qualified mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance;

  • Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems;

  • Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.;

  • Assist in testing and filtering oil and minor repairs to transformers, oil circuit breakers, regulators, etc.;

  • Prepare reports and records;

  • Operate Company's vehicles and equipment.

EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Know Company's safety rules, and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be willing and able to render practical first aid;

  • Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires;

  • Supply personal tools used in work;

  • Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one within a specified time period;

  • Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment;

  • Substation Apprentice 1st Year: Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as a Helper - Transmission & Distribution Dept., or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

  • Substation Apprentice 2nd Year: Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as a Substation Apprentice 1st Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications.

Must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Be particularly alert in observing hazards, communicating issues, and avoiding accidents;

  • Successful completion of the EEI CAST test;

Install secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings for vertical type construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits. 6. Install crossarms, secondary racks and clevis, anchors and guys, and install hardware and fittings for vertical type construction, including conductors, single phase transformers, lightning arresters, grounds, cutouts, etc., on dead circuits. 2. Trim trees. 3. Under close supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely. 4. Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures. 5. Direct work of helpers and apprentices as required. APPRENTICE 3RD YEAR JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Under close and/or directive supervision, and following prescribed routine and instructions as to methods and working details of average difficulty and importance, must know, understand and be willing and able to apply all applicable Company construction specifications in order to perform the less complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures and equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned: 1. Use hot line tools under close supervision of qualified workman. 2. Under close and/or directive supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely. 3. Fuse transformers and sectionalizing fuses. 4. String, sag and tie in conductors on dead lines of all classes. 5. Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes and install primary metering equipment under supervision of qualified workman. 6. Install, maintain, and repair street lighting equipment and fixtures. 7. Assist in making aerial and submarine cable installations, including the making of joints and installing potheads. 8. Locate trouble and restore service on all classes of lines, substations, sectionalizing equipment, etc. 5. Make all types of transformer installations; do phasing and check rotation on circuits; trace and clear grounds and opens on series circuits. 2. Do all classes of hot line tool work. 3. Reeve blocks. 4. Plan and lay out all work in a safe and efficient manner. 5. Check, handle and be responsible for all material removed from and returned to stock, and prepare reports and records. 6.
