We have daily shifts that allow our employees to have stable schedules and enjoy quality time away from the facility. Shift hours are early mornings on Monday- Friday from 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM and occasional weekends, allowing you to enjoy a great work/life balance.

Your Responsibilities as a Substance Abuse Counselor:

  • Conduct individual counseling sessions, under supervision, as scheduled and documents as required;

  • Conduct group and/or family sessions, under supervision, as scheduled and documents as required;

  • May co-facilitate assigned group or family sessions;

  • Responsible for initial assessments, as well as follow up assessment, for patients;

  • Prepare an individual treatment plans for each assigned patient;

  • Ensure all documentation regarding patient care, treatment and incidents is completed timely and in a clear, concise manner;

  • May act as a liaison between referral sources and patients;

  • Provide crisis intervention to patients, as needed;

  • May plan for aftercare for assigned patients;

  • May act as a liaison with insurance carriers, as requested;

  • May provide case management duties for patients, insuring individualized quality care;

  • Evaluate patient' needs and determines if referrals to other programs or facilities are needed; and,

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Your Skills and Qualifications as a Substance Abuse Counselor:

  • Bachelor's degree in social or health services field, with 2+ years exp in counseling field; OR

  • Bachelor's degree in other field with 4+ years in the counseling field;

  • Master's degree in social or health services field, with 1+ year professional work exp;

  • Degree must be from an accredited college or university.


  • Addiction Consultant in Training Level II (ACIT II) and Medication Assisted Treatment Specialist (MATS) and/or Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Consultant II (CADAC II) preferred

Performs functions of individual, group and family counseling. Performs all functions related to utilization review and discharge planning. Effectively communicates and collaborates with all members of the health care team to facilitate the episode of care so the patient receives services in a safe and timely manner, and the patient and family are provided all necessary resources and education. Interprets and communicates complex patient/family needs and role models caring practices to other caregivers. Assess patients' and families' psychosocial risk factors through evaluation of prior functioning levels, appropriateness and adequacy of support systems, reaction to illness, and ability to cope. Counsels patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial consequences of illness and/or disability; accesses and mobilizes family/community resources to meet identified needs. Provides mental health assessments of patients upon physician referral. Provides therapeutic intervention to facilitate complex discharge planning. Serves as the point person in child abuse/neglect, adult/elderly abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence. Serves as liaison between Indiana University Health and state and county child and adult protective teams. Provides intervention in guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, adoption, and mental health level II placements.</p><p>Masters Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related area is required.</p><ul><li><p>CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) certification may be required.</p></li><li><p>Requires current licensure or license eligibility in the state of Indiana as an HSPP, LMFT, LCSW or LMHC.</p></li><li><p>Clinical licensure preferred.</p></li><li><p>Requires knowledge of the impact of the disease process and of human behavior to provide psychosocial assessments, short-term therapeutic counseling, and crisis intervention to patients, families and staff.</p></li><li><p>Requires knowledge of state and county adult and child protective legal mandates.</p></li><li><p>Requires knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.</p></li><li><p>Maintains principles, practices and techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.</p></li><li><p>Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the community, medical teams, law enforcement, APS/CPS, schools, probation and other agencies as indicated.</p></li><li><p>Requires proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.</p></li><li><p>Requires relevant health care, mental health or community-based experience.</p></li></ul><p>Safeguarding our patients and each other is an important part of how we deliver the best care possible to the communities we serve.
