The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence is recruiting for a Subsistence Resource Specialist 1 located in Anchorage!

What you will be doing:

This is a permanent, seasonal position that will support Southern Region subsistence research projects. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with the development, planning, implementation, and reporting on the human dimensions of subsistence activities and regulations in Southcentral, Southwest, and Southeast Alaska, at a professional, entry level.

This work involves fieldwork in remote communities. Research topics include the harvest and use of large game, salmon and nonsalmon fish, marine mammals, and vegetation harvest and use, including the documentation of traditional knowledge. The incumbent will work under close coordination with Program Managers and other Subsistence Resource Specialists assigned to Southern Region projects to ensure quality and timely completion of priority tasks. The incumbent may also assist with researching and preparing materials for regulatory review and may, on occasion, support the Subsistence Section's Northern Region in field research.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is located in the Anchorage ADF&G regional office (333 Raspberry Road). The incumbent will regularly interact with members of the public in a research capacity by coordinating with rural communities to plan, implement, and review research, and conducting fieldwork to collect harvest or traditional knowledge data. Additionally, the incumbent will regularly interact with colleagues at ADF&G or other agencies regarding the management of Alaska's subsistence resources.

The office environment is dynamic with a focus on collaborative problem-solving. Fieldwork and other meetings typically require travel in small planes and boats away from the duty station to rural Alaskan communities for 1-2 weeks at a time multiple times per year.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge of and/or interest in subsistence in Alaska and a working knowledge of Alaska's diverse communities.

• Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and carry out tasks in a timely fashion.

• Knowledge of social science methods, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, writing research proposals, and technical or peer-reviewed reports, and preparing and presenting oral presentations.

• Experience and/or interest addressing public inquires on fish and wildlife issues or regulatory requirements using clear oral and written communication skills (i.e., explaining complex subsistence regulations, etc.) while working in rural Alaska.

• Familiarity and experience with standard office computing equipment and software, including Microsoft Office and Windows.

A Bachelor's degree in anthropology, sociology, geography or a closely related field.
