We are seeing an Interventionist and Research Coordinator for the NIDA-funded ED-LINC research study and Dr. Lauren Whiteside's portfolio of clinical research and programs.

As an interventionist, this position will work with existing study staff (Research Coordinator (RC), Research Study Assistants (RSA)) and the Principal Investigator (PI) on day-to-day clinical intervention activities focused on improving care of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) involved in the EDLINC study. Specifically, patients in the Emergency Department (ED) or inpatient spaces at Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center - Northwest with OUD will be invited to participate in research. Participants will be randomized to usual care or the Emergency Department Longitudinal Integrated Care (ED-LINC) intervention. The overarching goal of the ED-LINC intervention is to improve initiation, engagement and retention in medications for opioid use disorder (e.g. buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone), help participants decrease illicit drug use and improve linkage to outpatient care. The interventionist will perform all duties of the ED-LINC intervention which combines substance use goal setting, overdose education, brief bedside intervention using motivational interviewing techniques coupled with longitudinal care management and care navigation. The interventionist will also lead and plan weekly clinical care conferences with a multidisciplinary care team to discuss each intervention participant. This study is funded by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and builds on previous work showing feasibility of the ED-LINC model initiated from the ED.

This position will also coordinate study tasks working with existing study staff. This position involves the following complexities: coordinating clinical needs, working with clinicians in the ED and inpatient spaces and during weekly case conferences, conducting longitudinal care management with participants after their ED visit ends, managing RSAs, assigning tasks to other study members, working with the existing RC to ensure study tasks are complete including safety monitoring (regulatory) and compliance with data safety including co-creation of the data safety monitoring board (DSMB) reports for the ED-LINC project.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interventionist Duties (40%)

  • Conduct the ED-LINC intervention for study participants which includes goal setting, discussion of substance use, substance use treatment planning, care management, discussion with study physicians and treating clinicians and implementing treatment plans. These activities will proceed in-person, by video feed and by phone or text depending on the situation and activity.

  • Conduct care navigation and care coordination after hospital or ED discharge in-person, by phone or text and work with existing care managers, clinical teams and social work to improve patient care.

  • Utilize REDCap to track intervention participants in the ED-LINC trial, document these intervention elements and prepare and distribute detailed reports.

  • Work collaboratively with existing study staff members to conduct parts of the intervention and provide support for the clinical intervention team for case management activities.

  • Conduct standardized clinical assessments with study participants as part of measurement-based care and document the results of these assessments in REDCap.

  • Plan and arrange a weekly case conference to discuss ED-LINC intervention participants, measurement-based care, active issues and create treatment plans with study investigators. Documentation of all case conference outcomes will be in REDCap

  • Carry a study cell phone in order to conduct care management with participants and be responsive to intervention participants with acute needs

  • Perform regular patient safety monitoring including responding to participant report of suicidality by conducting suicidality evaluation calls, documenting outcome of these calls, regulatory reporting, and engaging in appropriate tasks to ensure patient safety in accordance with study policies and procedures.

  • Work closely with study clinicians to create and implement clinical plans.

Direct Management (40%)

  • Collaborate with entire study team including Principal Investigator, Research coordinator, co-investigators, study physicians and research assistants. Work closely with RA's, RC's and students working on ED-LINC.

  • Attend and/or lead weekly or bi-weekly study team meetings to discuss study operations, recruitment and follow-up rates, compliance and any issues that come up during the week.

  • Review and enter data ensuring data quality using Excel and REDCap including preparation of narrative reports, graphs, tables, charts and figures.

  • Maintain confidentiality of research data participant records.

  • Prepare documentation of adverse events and serious adverse events including communication with the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) chair and create reports for the data safety monitoring board (DSMB) and program sponsor

  • Conduct interviews with and track progress of patients enrolled in the study; interviews may be completed over the telephone or in-person.

Academic Outputs, Manuscript Development & Future Planning (20%)

  • Prepare manuscripts, presentations, reports and future grant submissions, including text and tables/figures for peer-reviewed publication.

  • Disseminate findings of the ED-LINC project to state-wide and national clinical and academic audiences

  • Share study results at group study meetings as requested by the PI.

  • Conduct literature reviews.

  • Draft and copy edit various professional correspondences and prepare for distribution.

  • Participate in strategic planning for ED-LINC study and other relevant research and program evaluation within the Department of Emergency Medicine Section of Population Health with the PI

  • Participate in other assigned activities as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in health or Science-related field and 2-3 years experience working with the target population in a medical or behavioral health setting OR relevant combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous human subjects' interactions

  • Previous experience working on a clinical research team

  • Demonstrated experience using REDCap and SPSS

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically proficiency in Excel

DESIRED:

  • A Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education
