VIEW JOBS 11/7/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-05T00:00 The West Virginia Science Adventure School, a unit within the Division of Student Life at West Virginia University, is seeking applications for a Program Director. The West Virginia Science Adventure School Program Director is responsible for the coordination, administration, and direction of the West Virginia Science Adventure School on a year-round basis. The West Virginia Science Adventure School (WVSAS) is a program designed to provide public school students in West Virginia with a week-long adventure based experiential model focused on science literacy, interpersonal development, student community development, healthy decisions, and sense of place. The WVSAS is administered through West Virginia University and facilitated at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Associated duties of the Program Director include program development, curriculum development, staff recruitment, training and supervision, strategic partnership development and management, and any other duties necessary to ensure the success of the West Virginia Science Adventure School. In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: * Be responsible for developing new program models to accommodate rapid program growth over the next 5 years. * Manage the existing programming surrounding rock climbing, zip lining, cycling, freshwater ecosystems, and phenology should be reviewed for growth opportunities. * Develop risk management plans within WVSAS. * Demonstrate knowledge and experience across multiple technical disciplines, and is familiar with risk management, instructional techniques and best practices for those disciplines (e.g. rock climbing, flatwater paddling, and zip lining). * Develop policies, procedures and processes for managing all components associated with experiential courses and trips. * Be responsible for travel throughout the state of West Virginia and to be on site during all programming. * Collaborate with full time WVU staff in Science Behind the Sport Program as well as the Water Research Institute to create, modify, and develop new curriculum. * Work with WVU faculty members to create new and innovative curriculum as new programming opportunities arise. * Supervise staff by recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, assigning duties, and evaluating performance. * Develop and facilitate an intensive two-week training course that successfully prepares instructors on curriculum, technical skills, fundamentals of group processing, experiential theory and practice, risk management, and student development. * Maintain and expand the strategic partnerships that allow the WVSAS to function. This includes working with Boy Scouts of America and Summit Bechtel Reserve representatives, the National Park Service, local outfitters, and public-school systems. * Ensure clear communication with parents, teachers, and school administrators before, during, and after programming. Applicants who apply on or before November 26, 2018 will receive first consideration. * Master's degree required in Recreation, Experiential Education, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, Public Administration or related field. * A minimum of 5 years of experience in the following areas * Progressively responsible professional experience: Experiential Education, Recreation, &/or Physical Education field. * Teaching experience in the experiential/ outdoor education field. * Experience in group outdoor trip planning, instructing, and leading. * Experience in personnel management and risk management. * Experience in developing, forecasting, monitoring, and interpreting financial reports and budgets. * Experience in outdoor program administration.
