The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable.
We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student who is passionate about genetics and pursuing a career in this field. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic laboratory environment focused on genetic testing and research. The undergraduate research assistant will work with skilled technologists, staff scientists, and a laboratory director certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). This role will involve contributing to various projects within the laboratory and actively participating in research with the goal of publication and presentation. Function/Duties of Position
Laboratory Techniques and Procedures: Understand the basics of genetic testing procedures, including sample preparation, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing.
Data Analysis and Interpretation: Collaborate with staff scientists to aid in the analysis of genetic test results. Learn to classify variants identified by genetic testing.
Quality Control and Assurance: Participate in quality control measures to ensure accuracy and reliability of laboratory results. Learn about regulatory requirements and compliance in genetic testing.
Research Support: Contribute to ongoing research projects within the laboratory, which may include literature reviews, experimental design, data collection, and analysis under the guidance of senior researchers.
Professional Development: Attend laboratory meetings, seminars, and educational sessions to enhance understanding of genetics, molecular biology, and laboratory techniques. Engage in discussions on current research trends and ethical considerations in genetic testing.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Strong interest in genetics and a desire to pursue a career in genetic counseling, clinical genetics, laboratory genetics or a related healthcare field.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in science and medicine, particularly for underrepresented populations.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior laboratory experience or coursework in molecular biology, genetics, or related disciplines is desirable but not required.
