General Job Description
This position is responsible for developing peer to peer relationships through the Office of Academic Support. Peer Mentors work to support university advising and enhance student access to academic resources. Peer Mentors will receive training, give individualized peer advice, and facilitate events or programs for groups of students. Mentoring will support and encourage academic decisions, aid students in major exploration process, and promote the development of successful academic and life skills. Job description may include routine duties with no prior experience needed to be able to perform. May involve a modest degree of responsibility and judgment. Routine data entry; Answering phones; Making copies; Greeting customers; Taking messages; Managing confidential information; Maintain regular attendance; and, Perform other job duties as assigned.
Specific Duties
Provide mentoring and outreach to undergraduate students at the university.
Act as an informed resource for all students accessing Student Success Center.
Guide students in accessing the many academic resources available at Highlands. Be prepared to guide students through the resources at your workstation.
Become familiar and receive training in Degree Audit, MY NMHU, E-Courses, and other related student resources. Be prepared to assist students with these services.
Provide individual peer mentoring on time management, studying, and exam preparation.
Attend ongoing training sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Maintain regular attendance and participation at campus events. Mandatory attendance is required and will be assigned per event.
Conduct active outreach, which includes telephone, email, text, residence hall and class visits.
Participate in ongoing projects assigned by supervisor.
Administrative duties include, but are not limited to, reporting of mentoring activities, advertising student activities, regular monitoring of student email account, and basic administrative duties as they arise.
Maintain confidentiality and aide by Federal Education Privacy Act (FERPA) at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: College student at NMHU enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours. High school diploma or GED. Experience: None
Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands
Frequently: Standing, Walking, Bending, Squatting, Kneeling, Repetitive hand motion, Prolonged use of computer. Occasionally: Lifting a minimum of thirty (30) pounds, Climbing.
Hourly Rate $12.00 Preferred Work Schedule Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Employment Term Spring
