Duties

Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as the incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training.

You will be assigned to a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor or group of counselors as an intern. You will be assigned tasks designed to familiarize you with different aspects of the occupation. The VRC develops the purpose, objectives, services, and outcomes during the evaluation. The program's primary focus will be helping veterans find work and set goals and objectives to help them become more independent in their daily lives.

Major Duties:

  • Provides services for employer consultation, employment development and placement, career counseling, and vocational planning and assessment.

  • Initiates evaluations to determine the presence of a vocational handicap, whether it qualifies as an employment handicap, the degree of the handicap, the viability of reaching a vocational objective, eligibility for Chapter 31 rehabilitation benefits, and the requirement for independent living services.

  • Under the discretion of the rehab counselor, explores treatment and other services for Chapter 31 Veterans.

  • Observe interviews conducted by counselors with veterans to learn about their psycho-social histories. It helps veterans make well-informed decisions about their careers using a variety of approaches, including tele-counseling, depending on the needs of the Veteran.

  • Assists counselors with establishing partnerships with administrators at schools, Vet Centers, military bases, and federal, state, and local agencies to determine the individual needs of service members and veterans and to provide essential assistance.

Work Schedule: Full time, Part-time; 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Hours may very based on duty location after selections have been made

Compressed/Flexible Schedule: At minimum 20 hours and maximum 80 hours each pay period depending on the student's school schedule.

Not To Exceed 1 year: The agency may extend this position without regard to service limits and restrictions in 5 CFR 213.104.

Are you currently a student that has been accepted for enrollment at least half-time in an accredited high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, or trade school and will be pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate?

Are you currently a student in good academic standing that is enrolled at least half-time in an accredited high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, or trade school and will be pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate?

You must remain enrolled and in good academic standing throughout the Pathways Internship Program and will be required to provide proof of current student status to be eligible for this program. Minimum qualifications for a GS-0199-07You must meet minimum qualifications for this GS-0199-07. You must submit transcripts to support your response if needed.

Applicant can qualify if they have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the federal service utilizing rehabilitation counseling skills, techniques, and resources needed to work with individuals with disabilities.

B. I have completed one (1) full academic year of graduate level education.

C. I have completed a bachelor's degree and meet eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) Provision. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. 1) Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. 2) Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Program Completion and Conversion

  • Interns may be converted into a GS-0101 Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

  • To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements

  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and

  • Perform their job successfully.

  • If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the target position and Full performance level may change based on the need of the organization at the that time. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.

  • For conversion into a GS-0101 Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a master's degree (or higher) program in rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation services, clinical rehabilitation counseling, counseling psychology, mental health counseling, career counseling or social work from an accredited college or university.
