BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENT SUPERVISION AIDE DEFINITION Under supervision, to monitor student behavior on an elementary, middle and/or high school campus; to monitor students boarding and disembarking from school buses; to monitor student behavior in a cafeteria; to enforce school rules and issue citations/detention slips; and to perform related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Incumbents of this class are employed on an hourly basis to perform exclusively the duties of a student supervision aide.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The tasks listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to positions in this class. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all of the tasks assigned to positions in the class, and it is not expected that all of the tasks listed are necessarily assigned to all positions in the class. Patrol designated areas; observe and control the behavior of students; enforce District and school policies and rules; discourage disruptive and potentially dangerous behavior; mediate disagreements; maintain order in cafeteria during lunch (some positions). Issue detention slips and citations; refer students to administration for discipline, as needed; escort injured students to school office; identify and report unauthorized individuals on campus; watch for smoking, alcohol, drugs, and weapons; observe and report any damage to school property; use a hand-held radio for communication with administration (some positions); perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Child and adolescent behavior. Problems affecting students in the community.

Appropriate safety precautions and procedures and basic first aid. School and District policies regarding discipline and appropriate student behavior. Ability to:

Learn and apply with good judgment District and school policies related to student behavior and activities. Control the behavior and activities of students in a wide variety of situations. Speak clearly and distinctly in English.

Establish rapport and gain the respect of students. Use a simple hand-held radio/transmitter (some positions). React appropriately in situations involving student misbehavior. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above, and the ability to perform the duties of the position. Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; twist and bend at torso; turn, raise, and lower head Lower Body Mobility: to walk on even and uneven surfaces; bend at waist; stoop; stand for prolonged periods of 2 hours; climb stairs; and step over objects. Strength: to push/pull objects, which weigh as much as 50 pounds on an occasional basis. Smell: to distinguish strong odors.

Environmental Requirements: be exposed to weather; work independently; encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others. Mental Requirements: to read and write English at a simple level; respond to difficult or emergency situations; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures.
