Job Title: Student Success and Accessibility Services Coordinator

Classification: 10-month, full-time, benefits-eligible staff position

Reports To: Dean of the College

Job Summary/Objective: The Student Success and Accessibility Services Coordinator is a key contributor to advancing the College's goals to support inclusivity, student success, and retention. This individual ensures that students receive appropriate academic accommodations and support, and manages the day-to-day operations of the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) that offers writing assistance and subject tutoring, and coordinates interventions with students on early alert and academic warning or probationary status. This individual also supervises both the subject tutors and peer academic mentors and is responsible for coordinating appropriate academic and other accommodations for students. This position works closely with student success initiatives across campus and in the community. The individual will collaborate and form partnerships with offices such as Student Life, Institutional Effectiveness, Communications, and Student Government. They will also proactively seek out and assist in the development of future grant projects related to student success initiatives across campus. In addition, the incumbent will also serve as a subject liaison.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Monitors emerging trends in instruction and student support approaches; recommends courses of action to support student learning and success at Sweet Briar College.

  • Liaison to Student Life and academic programs.

  • Participates on assigned committees and initiatives.

  • Fosters positive relations with faculty, students, and staff.

  • Identifies students who are at risk and provides proactive advising and support.

  • Oversees the early warning system and coordinates academic interventions with faculty, Dean of the College, and the Dean of Student Life.

  • Meet regularly with students on academic warning or probation in order to support student success and retention, and track progress towards academic goals.

  • Schedules appointments each semester with all students who have academic contracts, maintaining frequent contact via email communication, and in-person appointments.

  • Coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Academic Success Center, including both physical and digital presences.

  • Responsible for coordinating appropriate academic and other accommodations for SBC students with disabilities, primarily physical, medical, psychological, sensory and temporary.

  • Evaluate disability documentation to determine student eligibility for services and accommodations. This may require follow-up with the students, physicians, counselors, and other sources of documentation.

  • Provide reports and assessment for SACS, institutional, and administrative purposes.

  • Collaborate with relevant offices and individuals, such as institutional effectiveness, faculty, library, student life, admissions, and academic affairs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Hires, trains, and manages student tutors and peer academic mentors.

Work Environment: Office setting, working with students and visitors, computers, files and other materials.

Physical Demands: Standing, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Travel: Occasional travel to consortium-related meetings and for professional development.

Work Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with occasional night and weekend requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as education or counseling.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of issues related to and strategies that foster student success.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to engage, provide support to, and motivate students.

  • Ability to help students understand and adjust to intellectual environment and academic requirements of college.

  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills.

  • Understanding of academic and financial aid requirements.

  • Demonstrated effective problem-solving and strategic planning skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in various forms and strong presentation and facilitation skills.

  • Ability to manage and maintain records and databases to track, compile and interpret data.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

  • Ability to prioritize workload with multiple demands and frequent interruptions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in academic support.

  • Knowledge of applicable statutes including ADA, 504, etc.

  • Understanding of the differences between secondary and post-secondary law with regards to disabilities.
