Summary of Job Duties:

The Student Services Specialist primary responsibility is to provide comprehensive academic guidance and student services to current and prospective University of Arkansas at Hope-Texarkana students on the Texarkana campus. The Student Service Coordinator is the primary resource for students in all areas of student business at the Texarkana campus to include admissions, records, enrollment, academic advising, student activities, financial aid, and testing. The position reports to the Texarkana Site Director. This position occasionally requires work on nights and weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides academic advising for students.

  • Registers students in appropriate courses.

  • Assists in recruitment of potential students by advising them of general academic requirements and records for specific degree/certificate program; describes courses; and disseminates information regarding enrollment procedures.

  • Identifies current and potential academic needs; and refers students to appropriate campus resources for additional assistance.

  • Makes referrals to partnering social service agencies when appropriate. Refers students to appropriate human services and assists with locating other referral sources as needed.

  • Assists with new student orientation, campus tours, and other outreach events that may or may not be on the Texarkana campus.

  • Addresses areas of academic concern with students including providing academic interventions as necessary using the College's early alert and academic intervention system.

  • Works with students who have been referred for services such as tutoring, study skills, and time management assistance.

  • Promotes campus support programs and co-curricular involvement opportunities and assists with providing student activities.

  • Understands the processes and procedures of the Student Services areas, and makes referrals to other points of service such as counseling, career center, student development, Career Pathways, TRIO, and disability services.

  • Works collaboratively with the financial aid office to help students understand financial information and options.

  • Schedules, administers, scores, and explains placement assessments to assure proper student placement in designated classes in co-ordinations with the Director of Testing.

  • Schedules and administers online proctored exams and other necessary exams and assessments in co-ordination with the Director of Testing.

  • Works a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of various use groups and programs of the College.

  • Contributes to the overall success of the College and its students by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Skills and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university

  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively, must be self-directed with the ability to work independently within changing deadlines.

  • Ability to analyze and address the educational and personal needs of students.

  • Excellent inter-personal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills.

  • A flexible and enthusiastic attitude.

  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.

  • Computer literacy, including Word processing, Excel spreadsheets and database management are required.

Ability to work with and communicate with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master degree in education, counseling, college student personnel or related field.

  • Two years of experience in a higher education student services or academic advising environment.

  • Knowledge of academic and occupational programs, articulation agreements, transfer guides, assessment and academic career advisement.

  • Financial aid and scholarship knowledge.

  • Experience with student information systems.

  • Customer and solutions oriented with a strong commitment to customer service while maintaining compliance with policies.

Commitment to the mission of a comprehensive two-year college and understanding of the different components of a student services operation.

Additional Information:

Salary Information:

$36,000-$37,500.
