Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs and establishes a Kipuka Center, coordinating all activities within the center.

  • Procure furniture and technology for the Kipuka Center.

  • Establish a K-14 workgroup to develop and implement a recruitment plan.

  • Develop culturally appropriate welcome and retention programs.

  • Develop a culturally appropriate transition program. Hiring and evaluating peer and professional tutors and mentors for the center.

  • Provides day-to-day management and supervision of the Kipuka Center.

  • Promote and onboard Native Hawaiian students to the center through the provision of culturally appropriate and responsive student support services and activities.

  • Promoting learning environments that are culturally responsive and appropriate to support academic development and success.

  • Implements community and cultural programs, seminars, workshops to increase educational opportunities for Native Hawaiians.

  • Create a CARE plan for each onboarded student to monitor academic performance.

  • Create a transition plan for each student.

  • Facilitate mentorship and internship opportunities.

  • Ensure pathway students attend recruiting events (Career Fair/Find Your Future, etc.).

  • Collects data to support grant objectives and activities. Deploys an annual student satisfaction survey to guide continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with the project coordinator and PI on all aspects of grant management.

  • Assisting in procurement of materials and supplies for the Kipuka Center.

  • Create a digital cultural and historical bilingual (Hawaiian and English) tour of the college to be embedded in current class curricula.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business, Hawaiian Studies, Arts & Sciences, Education or related degree and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for advising, counseling or teaching Native Hawaiian students at the post secondary level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the implementation of programs and activities that support outreach, transfer, retention, academic success and leadership development of Native Hawaiian students as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with Hawaiian educational support programs, issues, activities, and resources.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in any field.

  • Three years' experience providing educational services and other assistance to Native Hawaiian students, student groups and/or Native Hawaiian communities.

  • Demonstrated Hawaiian language, culture and protocol ability and skills.

  • Considerable knowledge of university programs and local community-based organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and make presentations to community groups.

  • Ability to travel to local and national meetings and conferences.

Equivalencies:

Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
