Location: Knoxville, TN

The Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies is seeking candidates for a newly created Academic Advisor I position to assist in the operations of the department's undergraduate student support system. The person in this position will be engaged in academic advising activities that serve his/her unit in the delivery of academic advising and student support. This is a temporary, 12-month, full time, non-tenure track staff position. This particular posting is for a temporary appointment status through July 2022 and may be extended beyond that date depending on several factors.

The Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies is home to approximately 24 faculty members and 8 staff members. There are two undergraduate majors: Kinesiology, and Recreation & Sport Management. In total, there are approximately 1,300 undergraduate majors. There are several Master's degree programs, and a PhD degree program in Kinesiology and Sport Studies. In total, there are approximately 140 graduate majors.

Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Academic Advising:

  • Ensure comprehensive, quality academic advising and professional guidance for undergraduate students in KRSS majors. This may include advising special populations such as honors students, student-athletes, students identified as at-risk by faculty or staff, college exploratory students, etc.

  • Work with college advising office to transition underclass students to upperclassman status.

  • Review DARS reports and academic histories to co-create (with student) an academic plan for timely graduation using the Advising 2020 model, which incorporates self-exploration, career exploration, and experience learning.

  • Advise students in both KNS and RSM about experiential learning opportunities, coursework and requirements needed for graduate school, and study abroad opportunities, including how coursework will transfer back to UT.

  • Is responsible for understanding university academic policies and curricular/graduation requirements for programs within the department.

  • Upload all student files and forms to Navigate (academic plans, study abroad credit transfer forms, student information spreadsheets, etc.).

  • Complete College of EHHS and General Education petitions as needed.

Undergraduate Student Support & Reporting:

  • Respond in a timely matter to all student questions via email and phone.

  • Meet with prospective students (pre-college, pre-transfer, and pre-majors) to provide guidance on available programs and academic requirements, taking into account each student's individual goals.

  • Reporting of advising numbers, outcomes, satisfaction/evaluation, student demographics, and other student services data.

  • Process or assure completion of undergraduate Adds and Drops, as needed.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to help ensure an efficient and effective model of student support in the department.

  • Reporting as needed to assist faculty and the department head in decision making.

  • Help maintain and update general academic information, files, and databases for the department related to undergraduate programs.

  • Complete other duties as assigned by Director of Student Support, Assistant Director of Student Support, and Department Head.

Meetings & Trainings:

  • Attend weekly or bi-weekly KRSS advisor meetings.

  • Attend monthly KRSS staff meetings.

  • Attend monthly (during Fall & Spring) KRSS department meetings.

  • Attend KNS and RSM program area meetings, discussing items related to undergraduate programs and services.

  • Attend UT-wide Advising Community retreats and meetings. (Typically two times per year)

  • Participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate to position.

Other Duties:

  • Will support the Interim Director and Assistant Director of Student Support with other duties as needed including but not limited to:
  • help run events such as Freshman Welcome, Graduate Celebration, KRSS Awards Ceremony, New Graduate Student Welcome
  • facility issues such as space and equipment inventories, surplusing equipment

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree. Degree should be in student services or related field.

  • Experience in advising, counseling, mentoring, academic coaching, or related student services field at the college or university level is required.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in teaching, academic advising, or supervisory experience in a university setting, in areas related to department's programs.

  • Experience with Banner and DARS.

Needed Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of university policy, procedure, and curricular information.

  • Knowledge/proficiency of Microsoft Office suite, Banner, Navigate, and Canvas.

  • Strong written, oral communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to relate effectively to students, faculty, support staff, alumni, and parents in an academic advising capacity.

The Student Services Coach assists with managing collections, bad debt, and finalization of student registrations. * Support students through their academic careers. * Proactively advise groups of assigned students by phone, email, and text. * Address and resolve student problems through research, collaboration, and follow up. * Act as a point of contact to handle student account inquiries and follow up with all received emails and voicemails within one business day. * Document all student interaction through University applications. * Help students create academic plans. * Assist students electing to use financial aid with the appropriate application process and conduct on-going follow-up with students and/or Corporate's Student Financial Services to resolve issues. * Ensure accuracy and completeness of student payment plans, to include monitoring student accounts and communicating with students to resolve outstanding balances. * Ensure that the finalization of student registrations are in accordance with established University policy. * Monitor and outreach to students based on attendance, intervene with early at risk students, and assist students through the satisfactory academic progress process. * Implement activities to manage quarterly collection and bad debt expenses. * Monitor policy compliance in accordance with Strayer University, state, and federal rules and regulations. * Inform students of tutoring and other University resources. * Other responsibilities as assigned Education: * Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required Work Experience: * At least 3 years' experience in an educational setting providing direct service to students or 3 years' experience in a customer service-focused environment. * Adult education college or university experience preferred.
