Job Summary The respiratory therapy student employee is responsible for performing specified, limited respiratory therapy procedures under the direct clinical supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner. This individual will assist respiratory care practitioners in the provision of care to patients and their families and will perform assigned duties and responsibilities according to institutional and department specific policies, procedures, and guidelines. Direct administrative supervision will be the responsibility of the Respiratory Care Services Department Head. Education Must be currently enrolled and have completed the first semester in a respiratory therapy program accredited by CoARC or successor organization. Completion of at least one pediatric clinical rotation in respiratory therapy recommended Experience Licensures, Certifications, and/or Registries Must have submitted both Verification of Employment and Verification of Enrollment forms to the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Therapy. Must possess current Basic Life Support certification.

The therapist must be able to adapt to the particular area of duty assigned and must be able to perform special duties required by the assignment. Specific therapists are also trained to provide respiratory therapy services outside of the hospital setting during critical care patient transports. # The RRT may be required to supervise and be responsible for the work of other respiratory care practitioners. The therapist may also be assigned orientation and in-service education responsibilities as well as be asked to function in the role of mentor for students of respiratory therapy participating in clinical rotations at Children#s of Alabama. # The RRT works under the technical supervision and clinical guidance of the Respiratory Care Clinical Coordinators. Direct administrative supervision is provided by the area Respiratory Care Manager and the Respiratory Care Department Head. # The RRT carries out assigned duties and responsibilities according to policies, procedures, and guidelines approved by the Medical Directors of the department. Standards of performance for the area to which the individual is assigned must be maintained. Education The practitioner must be a graduate of an American Medical Association approved 2 or 4 year program of respiratory therapy. Experience The practitioner must have a minimum of one year experience in the field of respiratory therapy. A minimum of six months of intensive care unit experience is preferred. Licensures, Certifications, and/or Registries The practitioner must be licensed by the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Care. The individual must be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care or must be eligible for registry and sit for and pass the registry examination within a specified amount of time.
