Utah Valley University's Math Lab is seeking additional peer math tutors who can provide academic support to students both in-person and online. As a tutor, you will be responsible for assisting students from various backgrounds and skill levels in understanding math concepts and content material.

As a tutor, you will be responsible for providing academic support to students both in-person and online. You will also be expected to complete all mandatory trainings, maintain reliability and punctuality, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Additional responsibilities may include conducting class visits, creating and updating handouts, producing content-based videos, designing and delivering workshops, and assisting with various Math Lab events throughout the semester.

The Math Lab engages with students in the learning process to reinforce mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills as a way of cultivating an understanding of their academic coursework and the world around them. We recognize the opportunity-and responsibility-to inclusively support all students in ways that facilitate self-discovery and build confidence in their mathematical pursuits.

  • Must be a current UVU student.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • Must have completed ONE of the following with a grade of B or better:

  • Quantitative Reasoning (MAT 1030)

  • Quantitative Reasoning with Integrated Algebra (MAT 1035)

  • Calculus I (MATH 1210)

  • Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (MATH 2020)

  • Business Calculus (MGMT 2240)

  • Principles of Statistics (STAT 2040)

  • Introduction to Statistical Methods (STAT 2050)

  • Statistics for Behavioral Sciences (BESC 3010)

  • Business Statistics I (MGMT 2340)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed ONE of the following with a grade of A:

  • Quantitative Reasoning (MAT 1030)

  • Quantitative Reasoning with Integrated Algebra (MAT 1035)

  • Calculus I (MATH 1210)

  • Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (MATH 2020)

  • Business Calculus (MGMT 2240)

  • Principles of Statistics (STAT 2040)

  • Introduction to Statistical Methods (STAT 2050)

  • Statistics for Behavioral Sciences (BESC 3010)

  • Business Statistics I (MGMT 2340)

  • Completion of Linear Algebra (MATH 2270) or Ordinary Differential Equations (MATH 2280) and one upper division (3000 or 4000) course.

  • Effective tutors are:

  • Knowledgeable about a wide range of math curricula.

  • Well-versed in fundamental study skills and strategies.

  • Creative problem solvers who can find new approaches to challenges.

  • Excellent communicators who can adapt their coaching to meet a variety of needs and backgrounds.

  • Reliable with strong time and task-management skills.

  • Familiar with available student resources on campus.

  •  Effective tutors can:

  • Collaborate with students to enhance their content knowledge.

  • Communicate complex ideas and concepts in a clear, concise, and friendly manner.

  • Read, write, and otherwise convey ideas in English.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Cultivate professional relationships with staff, faculty, and students.

  • Contribute to the smooth operation of the tutoring labs and participate in on-going training.
