Job Description

We're searching for a Student Life Coordinator to join the Steger Center for International Scholarship team in Riva San Vitale Switzerland. The Student Life Coordinator will join a talented team of educators and faculty members who are leading semester-long programs at the Steger Center. The Student Life Coordinator cultivates strong relationships with the program faculty, full-time staff at the Steger Center, and students. The Student Life Coordinator demonstrates a high level of student engagement in the Steger Center including coordination of and presence at evening and weekend events, including planning and supporting regional travel. This may include traveling on program-specific trips.

Each semester approximately 54 students from Virginia Tech's Blacksburg, Virginia campus study at the Steger Center and live in Casa Maderni, Virginia Tech's internationally based living-learning community. While in Riva San Vitale, students engage in academic courses while being immersed in a European context. The Student Life Coordinator along with the Steger Center team cultivate an environment that brings together students, faculty, and professional staff who are dedicated to making the most of their study abroad experience through community-engaged learning, a culture of well-being, and the development of intercultural competencies. The Steger Center is a learning laboratory for students to learn and enact the Principles of Community where nurturing their growth toward our Aspirations for Student Learning.

Here's what you need to know about the role:

  1. You'll join both the Office of Living-Learning Programs team; a department that works to support intentional living-learning programs efforts for more than 5000 students and the Steger Center team, who work to share the best of Virginia Tech by working alongside communities across the world, specifically in the Ticino canton in Switzerland.

  2. You'll jointly report to the Executive Director of the Steger Center for International Scholarship and the Director of Living-Learning Programs in a Restricted twelve-month, 100% Administrative Professional, two-year appointment. There is an option for one additional two-year term.

  3. This position lives at the Villa Maderni (which houses the Steger Center) in Riva San Vitale Switzerland (in a one-bedroom apartment) and enacts the vision set by the Executive Director to create a holistic and integrated living-learning community experience for students studying at the Steger Center.

  4. In coordination with the Executive Director you will coordinate and implement programming including shared meals, guest speakers, and local and regional activities (including community service) that connect students to students in Ticino Switzerland, and the rest of Europe.

  5. In this role, you will facilitate student well-being by engaging in ongoing support and mentorship to students through one-on-one conversations, group discussions, travel, and other educational interventions. You will also serve as the primary student conduct officer at the Riva San Vitale campus, working closely with the Student Conduct Office in Blacksburg to uphold policies from the Student Code of Conduct and Steger Center Handbook.

  6. You'll be offered a base compensation package between $65,000 and $69,000 with a comprehensive benefits package. An on-site one-bedroom furnished apartment and meals at the Steger Center are provided. A half-fare rail card is provided to facilitate program travel requirements.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and full-time experience supporting students within a university setting

  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, development, and success

  • Experience working with diverse populations of students in complex institutional settings and fostering sensitivity to diversity issues in the University community.

  • Demonstrated vision and creativity in program design, promotion, and implementation

  • Experience that reflects adaptability, initiative, and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Articulated commitment to student engagement and success

  • Ability to work collaboratively and successfully maintain programmatic excellence

  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, International Education and related field; and full-time experience supporting students within a university setting.

  • Proficiency in both English and Italian language

  • Experience with living and/or working internationally

  • Experience collaborating with faculty

  • Knowledge of student development theory

  • Demonstrated creativity in identifying, brainstorming, implementing, and evaluating student needs within a study abroad setting.
