SESSION: Academic, (August 12, 2024-May 16, 2025) This is a one-year placement with an opportunity for re-application and hire

HOURLY RATE: $17.00/ hour up to 20 hours a week

JOB SUMMARY: Graduate Assistant will assist in the daily operations of the Office of Campus Engagement (OCE), with special focus in the areas of Student Activities Board (SAB), Student Government Association (SGA), and Fraternity Sorority Life (FSL). The GA will support the work of OCE through advising, program management, benchmarking and assessment, and strategic planning and execution. All functions related to the position will be supported by the Director of Campus Engagement (or his/her designee).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Student Activities Board

  • Develop and plan the fall, spring and transition retreat with SAB executive board

  • Alongside the Director of Campus Engagement, meet weekly with individuals on the executive team of SAB, working on structure, process and visibility of the organization and their events as it relates to their specific position.

  • Attend weekly meetings of SAB executive team to provide feedback on plans and opportunities for growth of the organization(s).

  • Assist the SAB executive team with creating a calendar of events, including the execution of contracts, marketing of events, and logistical support.

  • Attend all SAB sponsored events, as assigned or available based on G.A. academic schedule.

Student Government Association

  • Assist in the planning of the fall, spring and transition retreat with SGA executive board

  • Alongside the Director of Campus Engagement, meet weekly with executive board members to work on SGA senate structure, processes, and visibility, as well as organizational finances.

  • Attend weekly meetings of the SGA executive team to provide feedback on plans and opportunities for growth of the organization(s).

Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL)

  • Alongside the Director of Campus Engagement, serve as an advisor to the chapters and governing councils, scheduling meetings with chapter leadership as needed/appropriate throughout the week, month, and semester, as well as attending all council meetings.

  • Oversee the semester FSL program and event calendar with council leadership.

  • Assist in the planning and organization of programming and educational opportunities including, but not limited to council retreats, council/chapter transition, officer trainings, Presidents Council, risk prevention/harm reduction, hazing, alcohol and other drugs, new member experience, social justice, sexual assault prevention and accountability.

  • Support community, council and chapter specific events including, but not limited to recruitment/intake, Greek Week, Greek Gala/Awards, and meetings with students, advisors, alumni and more.

  • Oversee hazing prevention programming and awareness on an annual basis, alongside the Director of Campus Engagement

  • Analyze feedback and assessment, making recommendations as appropriate, for FSL programming and educational opportunities.

  • Work with campus partners to coordinate the renewal and oversight of the Olympus Agreement for chapters with houses on Vernon Street, including regular inspections of the houses.

Marketing

  • With the G.A. for Campus Engagement, coordinate the development and publicizing of the Office of Campus Engagement's Buzz Calendar and Weekly Buzz email.

  • Institute methods of communication with SAB, SGA, and FSL for the marketing of events and opportunities on campus.

  • Develop creative marketing plans for events, and assist in the social media promotion for the Office of Campus Engagement, SAB, SGA, and FSL

General Duties

  • Hold twenty (20) office hours per week, recognizing that some weeks, position responsibilities may require more to successfully complete requirements. Additionally, late night and weekend hours will be required to manage organization activities/events. Office hours can and will be adjusted to meet the needs of these activities/programs.

  • Meet regularly with the staff of the Office of Campus Engagement

  • Meet weekly with the Director for Campus Engagement

  • Attend weekly organization meetings, as assigned or available based on G.A. academic schedule.

  • Assist in daily activities of the Community Engagement office, the Community Development portfolio, and the University Experience and Student Success Division, through active participation on committees, portfolio initiatives, division-wide and university-wide initiatives.

  • Work collaboratively with the University Experience and Student Success Division, other campus colleagues, and/or committees and special projects, to achieve assigned functions, strategic plans, vision, and the mission of the University of Lynchburg.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Applicants must be accepted into a graduate program at the University of Lynchburg.

  • All candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with all members of the University community.

  • The selected candidate must pass a background check that is satisfactory to the University.
