Dominican University New York seeks an experienced Student Financial Services Advisor to join the Student Financial Services team. The Student Financial Services Advisor will be responsible for a wide range of task from awarding federal and state funding to assisting perspective students with payment options. This critical position needs someone with good problem-solving skills who is a team player, all the while preserving a professional and positive attitude. A Student Financial Services Advisor should hold a high-level familiarity of federal and state regulation and guidelines. They will work independently assisting students using a variety of mediums. An ideal candidate should have the knowledge to review, verify, and analyze financial aid applications and documents to determine the amount of financial aid available to assist families. They track all applications and provide timely delivery of information, services, and funding to students and their families. They educate applicants on financial aid programs, application procedures, award packaging, and keep them informed on their financial aid progress. They are responsible for requesting renewal and correcting applications as well as validating student enrollment and academic progress to ensure eligibility for financial aid.

Student Financial Services Advisor need to stay current on emerging trends and new legislation relating to financial aid, and adhere to industry best practices. The Student Financial Services Advisor must be organized, be able to prioritize, multitask, and be able to develop strong working relationships with students, employees, and the public.

Typical duties and responsibilities

  • Provides financial aid program information to students, including assisting with FAFSA processing, award packaging, and financial aid academic progress

  • Processes applications and other documents for student financial aid eligibility

  • Initiates requisitions for financial aid disbursements to student

  • Receives, evaluates, and verifies financial aid data and documents submitted by student

  • Calculates student needs and adjusts financial aid as necessary

  • Submits initial, renewal, and correction applications as needed

  • Certifies student enrollment, ensuring adherence to academic progress policies and eligibility requirements

  • Participates in financial aid workshops and presentations

  • Assists students and prospective students regarding eligibility requirements of financial aid

  • Maintains awareness of best practices, emerging trends, and new legislation relating to financial aid

  • Maintains student financial aid data in online computer systems or other systems

  • Key person for all perspective students and families

Education and experience

  • 3+ years of experience working in the financial aid functional area in a college or university setting

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Required skills and qualification

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work independently and with others

  • Working knowledge of financial aid eligibility requirements and programs

  • Proficiency with a variety of computer applications and reporting tools, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Excellent customer service skills a must.

Preferred qualifications

  • Bilingual in English-Spanish

  • Jenzabar/Powerfaids experience
