Position Summary:

Serving the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) as one of four Student and Faculty Support Specialists (SFSS), the key functions of this position are supporting the college-level recruitment of prospective first-year and transfer students and managing the HSS Student Success Resource Center (SSRC) operations. The Recruitment and Operations Specialist will work collaboratively with a variety of faculty members and staff within the College and across the university.

Primary responsibilities include (a) coordinating College-level recruitment initiatives (including participation in large Admissions events and faculty engagement opportunities during daily visits), (b) providing oversight for the operations of the HSS Student Success Resource Center (including hosting programs that support current student retention), (c) coordinating academic progress report outreach for the College, (d) recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising HSS student staff members, and (e) providing supplementary support for college-level communications and events within HSS.

This position requires excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills, creativity, organization, and attention to detail. Incumbents in the position must balance multiple facets among simultaneous responsibilities. A drive to create inclusive, interactive, and engaging experiences for participants is central to the role and an ability to provide support in both English and Spanish is preferred.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences includes the following academic units: Africana Studies; Anthropology; Chicana/o and Latinx Studies; Communication Studies and Journalism; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Economics; English; Gender Studies; Geography, GIS, and Sustainability; History; Leadership Studies; Philosophy; Political Science and International Affairs; Sociology; and World Languages and Cultures.

The Student Success Resource Center collaborates with HSS faculty and staff, as well as campus partners to support students' academic success and retention. Driven by our values of holistic student support, the SSRC strives to provide equitable opportunities for UNC students to develop skills that promote academic growth, increase campus knowledge, and persist to graduation.

After a three-month training period, HSS staff members are typically permitted one day of remote work each week. Occasional night and weekend work will be required in alignment with recruitment events, SSRC programming, student staff training, and HSS celebrations.

Job Duties:

35% College Recruitment and Admissions Liaison

  • Serve as the HSS admissions liaison and coordinator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences during prospective student events (first-year and transfer), e.g., Destination UNC

  • Attend Admissions events while answering prospective student questions, introducing HSS programs, and facilitating connection with current faculty (ideally with an ability to do so in English and Spanish)

  • Manage HSS daily visit logistics for faculty and prospective student meetings

  • Collaborate with HSS faculty and staff to administer prospective student mailings, i.e., postcards and email campaigns

  • Coordinate HSS and SSRC giveaways and related budgets

  • Collaborate with the Director of the Student Success Resource Center to support New Student Orientation and the HSS College Welcome

  • Coordinate and create efforts to maximize outreach to current and prospective HSS students, e.g., academic support sessions and department-specific programming

  • Conduct event assessment and evaluation for continued growth and alignment with student needs

  • Utilize technology to coordinate reservations and event logistics including 25Live, Qualtrics, Slate, Canvas, and the Microsoft Office Suite

25% Student Success Resource Center Operations and Oversight

  • Serve as the front-facing position to welcome and support students, faculty, and external guests in the Student Success Resource Center, i.e., answering questions and addressing a variety of concerns (ideally with an ability to do so in English and Spanish)

  • Provide appropriate referrals and connect visitors with campus resources. The SFSS will be knowledgeable about student development and be committed to creating an equitable and inclusive space for all members of the UNC community

  • The SFSS will have detailed knowledge and maintain point-of-contact communication with other campus support services, including but not limited to: Tutorial Services, Student Outreach and Support, the Student Counseling Center, the Disability Resource Center, Bear Central, Admissions, UNC's cultural and resource centers, the Writing Center, Math Lab, and the Center for Career Readiness

  • Create and host SSRC events and activities to support students' success, retention, and belonging

  • Support the student retention initiatives of the Student Success Resource Center and HSS Dean's Office

  • Maintain the physical SSRC space and operations including office supply purchasing and inventory, technology and maintenance requests, and space reservations

  • Provide secondary support for the HSS phone line and shared inbox

  • Utilize databases, e.g., EAB Navigate and Degree Works, to maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions (including in-person visits, phone, and online consultations)

15% Academic Progress Report Coordination

  • Each semester, the Division of Student Academic Success launches an academic progress report campaign with faculty across the university. The Recruitment and Operations Specialist will coordinate the subsequent outreach efforts for the HSS students in need of support, resources, and/or recognition

  • Distribute progress report outreach emails, assist in scheduling student follow-up appointments, complete referrals to the Dean of Students Office, and log related notes in EAB Navigate

  • Collaborate with fellow SSRC staff members to create initial progress report outreach each semester

  • Conduct related assessment projects to inform and improve future outreach lists, resource communication, and student support initiatives

10% Recruit, Hire, Train, and Supervise Student Employees

  • Recruit, hire, train, and directly supervise student employees for the SSRC, i.e., 3-5 staff members annually. Supervision will include ongoing training and development, evaluation, scheduling, and support with evolving job responsibilities and office procedures. The SFSS will ensure that the student employees are also committed to creating an equitable and inclusive space for all members of the UNC community

  • Collaborate with the HSS Human Resources Specialist and fellow Student and Faculty Support Specialists to facilitate the hiring process for all HSS student staff members (~40 students annually)

  • Facilitate annual student employment contract updates and biannual grade, funding allowance, and conduct checks

10% Supplementary HSS Communication and Event Support

  • Maintain SSRC website, digital resources, and create some current and prospective student communications, e.g., social media event promotions and resource fair flyers

  • Serve as secondary support for the responsibilities of the HSS Communications Specialist

  • Provide secondary support for college-wide events, e.g., graduation celebrations and Honors Convocation

5% Other Duties as Assigned

  • Occasional night and weekend work will be required in alignment with recruitment events and HSS celebrations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in communication studies, recreation, tourism, and hospitality, public relations, marketing, business, theatre/performance, education, graphic design, or related field within the humanities and social sciences or three years of equivalent and related work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Ideally, applicants will have related higher education work experience; excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; presentation skills, strong attention to detail; proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite applications, willingness to learn a variety of software platforms; a strong work ethic; experience working with students from historically marginalized identities, and a demonstrated ability to work and collaborate well with students, faculty, parents, and staff in both English and Spanish. A commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice is central to the position.
