Position Summary

The Student Engagement Program Coordinator at International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is responsible for two main areas of international student engagement at the University of Minnesota. The two main areas are (1) creating an inclusive and welcoming international learning community for new international students as they start their academic journey and (2) coordinating the Culture Corps leadership program focused on international students developing projects and initiatives that bring their voice, talents and global perspectives to the University of Minnesota campus as well as managing the programs logistics and administrative tasks.

This position is part of the Student Engagement and Intercultural Initiatives team within ISSS. This team serves all international students from non-degree, undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. This position will work in collaboration with the ISSS internal areas such as New Student Transition Team, Sponsored International Students, International Student Exchanges, GO Minnesota (short-term study options) and ISSS Programming Team as well as external campus partners such as Orientation and Transition Experiences, the Graduate School and units with the Office of Student AffairsThis position will be supervised by the Director for Student Engagement in ISSS.

Salary: $52,176.00-$56,858.00

Job Responsibilities:

Program Development and Oversight (30%)

New Student Initiatives

  • Manages the virtual pre-arrival International Student Preparation Course (iPrep) including development, design, updating, implementation, and monitoring on the Canvas learning management system

  • Designs and develops the international student parent communications and events with Orientation and Transition Experiences (OTE) and Parent Program in August

  • Provides work direction for student leaders, program participants, and volunteers in various program areas including the Global Gopher Experiences (GGE) for new students; liaison with the Global Gopher Leadership team members and the Global Gopher Influencer team social media team

Student Leadership Initiatives

  • Develop student leadership capacity on campus through identifying strategic opportunities and goal-setting engagement plans for Culture Corps

  • Initiate outreach to faculty, staff or administrative units regarding opportunities and effective delivery of educational opportunities for internationalization on campus

  • Create a framework for individualized mentorship and supervision according to program and individual student goals Assist with management, forecasting, and evaluating the Culture Corps budget

  • Analyze needs of Culture Corps participants, respond with appropriate program development and evaluate the outcomes of the program

Program Delivery and Coordination (40%)

New Student Initiatives

  • Plans and implements virtual and in-person Global Gopher Experiences. These experiences are designed to orient new students with various U of M offices that they will work with during their time at the University, such as Off-Campus Housing, Academic Resources, and Boynton Health Services

  • Assists with planning and implementing an in-person orientation series each August and January for new international students arriving at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

  • Partners with the Office of Housing and Residential Life on the coordination of International student early arrival housing, including creating clear and concise communications and assisting with move-out from the early arrival housing into their permanent on and off-campus housing placements

Student Leadership Initiatives

  • Help design, implement, develop, and evaluate leadership curriculum through the Culture Corps program

  • Supervise and mentor two to three interns utilizing best practices in supporting their professional development through the various programs they have been hired in, as well as monitoring their progress

  • Administer, advise, supervise, and approve Culture Corps student applications and awards

  • Coach program participants on ways to communicate the skills they developed during their future job search processes

  • Coordinate the logistics and administrative tasks of the Culture Corps database, reporting and data analysis for the Executive Impact Report, and liaison with the IT team to improve automation workflow

  • Assist with scholarship administration and answer questions related to Student Finance and awards distribution

  • Provide program-specific reporting data, follow up with students and campus partners in completing evaluation requirements, and clean up data

  • Review and prepare scholarship applications for review by the Culture Corps funding committee

Outreach and Communications (20%):

New Student Initiatives

  • Help coordinate training and meetings with campus partners and students.

  • Coordinate campus partner outreach related to new student communications and processes new international students need to understand (for example, create/edit content in communications/publications such as iPrep, advisor handbook, FAQ, new student emails, website updates, etc.).

  • Coordinate communications (emails, social media, newsletters) in collaboration with the GPS Communications team

  • Assist with email responses from new students.

Student Leadership Initiatives

  • Promote internationalization through Culture Corps at the University of Minnesota campus by utilizing the knowledge and skills of our international students, to educate, inform and interact with members of the University community in and out of the classroom.

  • Meet with campus partners to develop Culture Corp initiatives

  • Prepare executive annual report with impact data and analysis

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MA + 2 years of relevant experience or BA/BS + 4 years of relevant experience in the following fields of studies: international education, higher education, counseling, social work, or a related degree

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse team of people.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks during the same time frame.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate programs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with University of Minnesota policies, systems and applications such as Aplus and PeopleSoft.

  • One or more years of personal and academic counseling, advising experience, managing a diverse team (students or staff), or supervising international students

  • Multicultural experience such as having been an international student or studied abroad or had significant domestic multicultural experience

  • Strong inclusion and student centered focus skill set

  • Experience understanding student challenges and creating change based on student voice

  • Experience in adapting to ambiguous situations and pivoting when priorities shift.
