Job Summary:

The Peer Mentor at St. Petersburg College plays a vital role in supporting the success and well-being of fellow students. The peer mentor serves within the First-Time Titans learning community, coordinating and collaborating with faculty mentors and campus Learning Resources points of contact to support students in the early semesters of their college experience. Additionally, the mentor works within the library or learning center to share knowledge and applied concepts about essential college-level skills to both First-Time Titans and other students through our Success Strategy Station, a specialized service within Learning Resources that aims to enhance the academic journey by coaching students on relevant strategies for success, such as navigating MyCourses, writing a discussion post, managing time, and note taking. The peer mentor may choose to share strategies that best suit their own knowledge and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support: Serve as a role model and guide for fellow students, especially those in the First-Time Titans learning community, providing insight into the college experience and promoting student engagement and success.

  • Learning and Engagement: Collaborate with the on-site point of contact in Learning Resources to facilitate student appointments in our Success Strategy Station and to promote engagement in our First-Time Titans (FiTT) Center--a learning lounge dedicated to group study and socialization--or at identified campus activties and events.

  • Community Building: Foster a welcoming environment, encouraging a culture of belonging and active participation in Titan life. Recommend relevant services, programs, and resources to students that align with their academic and personal goals.

  • Peer Outreach: With assistance from faculty mentors and Learning Resources staff, actively reach out to students to identify their needs, provide guidance, and connect them with appropriate college resources and support services.

Qualifications:

  • Course enrollment at SPC for at least six credit hours.

  • Record of academic achievement, including one reference from an SPC instructor.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and community engagement.

  • Experience or familiarity with college-level academic skills and resources.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and peers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a mentoring or leadership role.

  • Knowledge of college resources, services, and student life.

Benefits:

  • Gain valuable leadership and mentoring experience.

  • Develop strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Make a meaningful impact on the college community.

  • Earn a peer educator certification with a prescribed level of training and hours of interaction with students.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit their resume and a brief cover letter outlining their interest in the Peer Mentor position and how their experiences align with the role's responsibilities.

Funding and Compensation:

Student employment is an important source of financial aid. It is part-time, temporary employment which is contingent on continued eligibility. Opportunities are available at all campus sites year-round. Available hours are dependent on students' eligibility and department needs. Approved students are paid $15.00 per hour. Students are paid biweekly. Funds are sent directly to the student and are not subtracted from any balance due to SPC.
